Kolari Vision Uv/ir Cut Hot Mirror Pro 2 Lens Filter (55mm)

The 55mm UV/IR Cut Hot Mirror Pro 2 Lens Filter from Kolari Vision is designed to normalize your camera when it has either a full spectrum or two-spectrum modification. In either case, it allows light to pass normally to the sensor, so you can shoot normal photos. The filter is designed with multicoated glass optics and a slim, knurled brass filter ring threaded on both sides. (The optional standard version has an aluminum ring.)
The filter can only be used with a modified camera. A spectrum-modified camera is one in which the camera's native low-pass filter was removed in order to support certain IR filters for IR photography. If you have such a camera, this hot mirror filter will let you take normal photos without having to make any changes to the spectrum modification. The filter blocks IR light and some UV light, the same way the native low-pass filter that was removed from the camera during modification would have. The filter requires no exposure compensation.

Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. Does this filter have to be used with a full spectrum camera?
A: While it may be possible to use the Kolari Vision Pro Gen 3 Infrared Lens Filter (930nm) on an unconverted camera using a long exposure, it is not advised. One would not get good results on a normal camera. The only options for infrared photography when using a normal camera are the 720nm and 850nm filters.
Q: 2. does this come with clear filter?
A: Unfortunately Kolari Vision EF-EOS R Drop-In Lens Adapter with VND Drop-In Filter does not include a clear filter.
Q: 3. What extension tubes can be successfully used for this lens? Canon's do not work
A: ZEISS Otus 55mm f/1.4 ZE Lens for Canon EF is compatible with Canon Extension Tube EF 25 II https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/300603-REG/Canon_9199A001_Extension_Tube_EF_25.html
Q: 4. Will this work with the Sony A7III (full spectrum modified)? I know some sony cameras have a special hot shoe and need adapters
A: The shoe on the Kolari Vision KV-FL1 Multispectral Flash with IR and UV Flash Filters will not work well on Sony cameras.
Q: 5. DOES THIS LENS WORKS WITH A CAMARA D3X AND COULD THE AUTO FOCUS AS WELL ? THANK YOU,REGARDS,SERGIO PAZOS.
A: 13)The Zeiss 55mm f/1.4 Otus Distagon T* Lens for Nikon F Mount is compatible with All Nikon DSLRs, including the D3X. The lens is a manual focus lens, meaning that it needs to be manually focused, autofocus will not be supported.
Q: 6. Is this front threaded?
A: Yes, this filter has 77mm front threads.
Q: 7. Will this work with the Nikon Z8? Full spectrum modified.
A: The Kolari Vision KV-FL1 Multispectral Flash with IR and UV Flash Filters works with most cameras that have a standard hotshoe like the Z8.
Q: 8. How much light do I lose using this filter? Will I be able to hand hold the camera at ISO 200 and f2.8?
A: Using the Kolari Vision Pro Gen 3 Infrared Lens Filter (780nm, 77mm) on a camera not converted to IR the filter will block 10-15 stops. Using it with an IR converted camera it will be about 1-2 stops of light.
Q: 9. A lens this good, you should rightfully list camera bodies as an accessory. I'm a Canon guy for 40 years, but if I buy this lens, Nikon might be the best choice of camera. What is the best match?
A: Probably this answer is too late for you, but I'm being careful about evaluation of this lens. I'm using it on a Nikon D800e, and it's performing beautifully, especially for night shots where the specular highlights are well contained and don't seem to bloom on the sensor . The only drawbacks I've found is it's not macro, it's not weather sealed, and the cost has diminishing returns. I understand the trade-off for not having macro focus; increasing the focus range would reduce the precision of focus in the normal range, and also probably complicate the movement of the internal elements. Not sealing it against moisture makes sense if the intended use is in the studio.Still, there is some truth to the hype. The coupling to the in-focus indicator is better than any other manual focus lens I own including a Zeiss Makro-Planar T* 2/100. Because digital cameras are dependent on auto-focus, they do not come with optical focusing aids. Focusing is accomplished either normally through the viewfinder--something I find difficult to do with precision--using live view--which can be done with a tripod and relatively static subjects--or with the focus indicator. The clarity and contrast of the image produced by this lens allows it to be used with the focus indicator on the D800e, an important practical feature.
Q: 10. Hello,I am concerned about how a person determines if a subject is in focus or not. Will my focusing green dot on my Nikon D610 work with this lens? Do I have to look at the image and determine focus by the picture quality. I have tried magnifying eyepieces and my eyesight will not allow me to use them. Thanks in advance.Bill
A: When the lens is stopped down the dot indicating that focus is achieved works fine. When working at a shallow depth of field, live view or a zacuto z pro finder helps with focus. If using live view a helpful hint I found on the internet is to program the center button of the multiselector (option f2 in the custom settings on a D-810 so that live view will immediately go to zoom mode when this button is pushed when you're in live view. This button can also be programed to zoom during playback to quickly check focus. You can program it for 50%, 100%, or200% magnification and it zooms centered on the site of your focus point. On a sunny day a hoodman is very useful. It's much smaller than a zacuto and can be quickly placed over the review screen to check exposure or focus in the sun when you can't see the liveview screen well. If relieing on the in camera focus dot for focusing with a narrow depth of field, there is quite a distance that the lens focus ring can be moved and yet still indicate that the camera thinks you are in focus. I did some test shots and I found that sometimes even though I thought I turned the focus ring until it was about in the center of where focus was indicated when coming into and out of focus as the ring was turned, the picture sometimes was still slightly out of focus. I found that if I started focusing in front of my desired site and turned the focus ring until the camera just indicated in focus I often achieved good focus, but when I began focusing behind the subject and turned the focus ring until the camera indicated in focus then the image was always fuzzy. This also happens with my other camera, a D700.
