Would a polarizer do basically the same thing?

A: While it is entirely possible to use these filters with a DSLR in b+w mode, it will not be the same as shooting black and white film, as a digital camera shoots in RGB and then converts to a black and white profile. If you do choose to use these filters with a DSLR shooting in black and white, you will need to set a custom white balance as well, as the camera will see the green/red/yellow and try to correct for them in auto white balance or other preset white balance modes. Additionally, another option you can try is to shoot your images in RGB mode, and then in post production, particularly in Adobe Photoshop, add a B&W layer or a Channel Mixer layer to obtain a more accurate black and white image. A circular polarizer will work as well.

A: I believe this filter is meant to be loose so that it can be easily turned to get the gradation to hit your photograph in the perfect position. Mine is loose as well and works well. It's my favorite filter!

A: No it will not. Tamron has had two different versions of an 18-270mm lens, and neither had this filter thread size. The current version of the lens is the PZD version which has a 62mm sized filter thread. The previous version had a 72mm sized filter thread. To confirm which size your lens requires you may simply remove the lens cap and look at the number on the underneath side.
