Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Could we get an update on the question as to whether this fits the Nikon z 600mm f/6.3? Two answers from 2023 contradict e.o.

A: The Really Right Stuff LCF-22 Foot for Nikon NIKKOR Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S, Z 600mm f/4 TC VR S, and Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S is not compatible with the Nikon NIKKOR Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S Lens (Nikon Z).

Q: 2. What about a filter for protection over the front of the lens?

A: David. First off, I absolutely love this lens. It is simply amazing in all aspects. Bit heavy for an old guy but much, much lighter then the old NIkon 400 and the new Nikon 600mm and 800mm. As to the filter. First off there is nothing to screw a traditional Hoya UV filter into. During investigation I read Ken Rockwell's articles on the Nikon 400mm f/2.8 FL VR lens. I recommend you read it. He seems to indicate that the lens comes complete with a built in front protective piece of glass called a meniscus protective glass element This glass is not part of the optical glass elements, but has some ghosting features. Following this info, I had a live chat with on of the B&H technical consultants and questioned them about a UV protective filter and they backed Ken's article. The Nikon hood provided with the lens is very durable but a bit awkward at times. My wife donated a size 6.5 lightweight Vanessa Shoe bag that is perfect to cover the front of the lens when not in use in the field. Its a very effective fast on, fast off dust cover and even has a draw string to tighten onto the lenses when installed. Hope this helps.

Q: 3. Can a monopod be attached to the bottom of this foot?

A: Yes, the bottom of the Kirk LP-72 Replacement Lens Foot for Nikon Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S, Nikon Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S, and Nikon Z 600mm f/4 TC VR S Lenses has a 1/4 inch female thread like most cameras. It is best for a long plate like this to use an Arca-Style clamp or head on the monopod for the best secure connection.

Q: 4. Which foot replacement would you recommend for this lens and why?

A: I recently purchased the Really Right Stuff replacement foot for Nikon 400mm f.2.8 FL. Unfortunately the balance of the Lens with the foot is very far forward. The foot is only about half way in the Wemberley head when neutrally balanced. I don't think this is a safe configuration. The design of the foot needs to be about 2 longer. Incidentally the foot that comes with the Lens has the same balance issue. I am using a lens coat so that may have some effect on the balance but I don't think it accounts for all of it. I have a 6 generic Wimberley plate that I mounted to the stock lens foot with 2 sticking off the front and that is working. Not as nice as a single piece replacement would be though.

Q: 5. Does it fit to 400 2.8 tc with the hood reversed? How is it compare to the Wimberley 502 or the Hejnar foot

A: The Kirk LP-72 Replacement Lens Foot for Nikon Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S, Nikon Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S, and Nikon Z 600mm f/4 TC VR S Lenses will for the Nikon Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S with the hood reversed. The Kirk foot is a better built product in my opinion.

Q: 6. will a monopod attach to the bottom of this foot?

A: Yes, like most feet like Really Right Stuff LCF-22 Foot for Nikon NIKKOR Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S and NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S it has a 1/4 thread on the bottom of it to fit onto a monopod or tripod. Note it is best for security and fit to use with that plate a Arca-Swiss clamp or a head with a Arca Swiss clamp.

Q: 7. Will it fit the Z 600 6.3 lens?

A: No, the Kirk LP-72 Replacement Lens Foot for Nikon Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S, Nikon Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S, and Nikon Z 600mm f/4 TC VR S Lenses is not compatible with the Nikon NIKKOR Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S Lens; the Really Right Stuff Foot for NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S Lens is compatible with the 600mm f/6.3 lens. BH #RELCF21

Q: 8. Does this fit the latest Nikon 400mm f/2.8E FL ED VR Lens ?

A: yes

Q: 9. Is it possible to buy only the part that fits over the lens hood?

A: When it comes to the LensCoat Lens Cover for Nikon NIKKOR Z 600mm f/4 TC VR S Lens (Realtree Max4) you can not get the camo cover for just the hood and that appears to be the case with most other brands as well. A potential solution is to get a LensCoat TravelHood (Large, Realtree MAX-4), BH# LETHLM4.

Q: 10. Will the RRS LCF-22 foot work with the Nikkor z 600mm 6.3 S lens?

A: The Really Right Stuff LCF-22 Foot for Nikon NIKKOR Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S, Z 600mm f/4 TC VR S, and Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S is not compatible with the Nikon NIKKOR Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S Lens.

The foot is sturdy and its dimensions are similar to the original Nikon part. It does not have the padding of the original; instead, it allows you to grab it placing your index finger in the indentation that is next to its base. A great idea!

Why Nikon doesnt put an Arca compatible foot on their lens's is beyond me.
The RRS fits, is solid and comfortable to hand hold. I does what it is supposed to do.

This is my first Kirk foot but it won’t be my last. Fit and finish are top notch. It easily beats the Hejnar feet I have for other lenses.

I replaced the stock foot after the Arca-Swiss type plate I'd attached to it came loose. When I first got this lens (initial release) there were no aftermarket arca-swiss foot available. Why Nikon doesn't include that on a lens obviously intended for professional use i beyond me. The RRS foot is extremely well made and the finger well makes carrying the lens easier than with the stock foot. I'm very pleased with this product and have no hesitation in recommending it!

An excellent replacement lens foot for the Nikon 800mm PF lens for photographers using Arca-Swiss style mounting systems. Why Nikon does not design Arca-Swiss mounting capability into their lens feet remains a mystery. Thank you RRS for filling this need with a great product!
