This 40.5mm Tiffen ND Filter is a solid ND filter with a filter factor of 128x that provides a 7-stop exposure reduction. Its 2.1 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Anyone having issues using lens caps and this filter? Can you share what lens cap you're using on top of this?

A: I use the lens cap that came with the filter, and it works quiet well - it's a slip-on, but seems to stay without any issues.

Q: 2. Will this fit canon drop in filters?

A: No, Neewer EF to EOS R Mount Adapter with Variable ND Filter (1.5-9 Stop) uses a properitary drop in filter.

Q: 3. What is the widest focal length this can be used on with no vignetting?

A: I have the filter on my 24-70mm/f2.8 lens. So the widest is 24mm. I did not see any vignetting. I am very happy with this filter.

Q: 4. Does this filter have hard stops?

A: This filter provides a hard stop at the beginning and at the end of the stop rotation. Please keep in mind there is no D-click between stops.

Q: 5. Is this a hard stop filter where it goes from 2 to 5 and then it can't proceed further ?

A: The rotation of the filter is smooth. It does not click as you rotate it. It also stops rotating once you reach the maximum or minimum density.

Q: 6. is the 67mm version front threaded? what's the size? want to fit my lens cap

A: It is front threaded. The front thread is 72 mm. The front thread is written under the Specs tab in the section that says Front Accessory Thread.

Q: 7. i have a question regarding this filter, do I need to use the lens hood for this filter, with the filter on the lends, the hood does not fit, is it ok to use the 24-70 2.8 70-200 2.8 17-35 2.8 24-120 4.0 lenses without hood, light will not stray inside the lens, with the ND filter on.? please respond. thanks. Ara

A: My best advice is to try a few shots with the hood on and off on each lens. The W.A. (17-35) will probably give the most trouble, but check the others as well.

Q: 8. Does this create vignetting on the Voigt 40mm f/1.2 on a Leica M?

A: No, this filter should not cause vignetting on a 40mm lens.

Q: 9. Does the front filter thread rotate when changing ND Amount? Looking to add a step up ring and go to a matte box.

A: Yes, the front threads on this filter are a 86mm size.

Q: 10. Is there a case available for these yet? Looking to clip somewhere between 3 and 7 of them to my belt for gimbal work.

A: No, there is not currently a NiSi branded case for the NiSi Full Spectrum FS ND Drop-In Filter for ATHENA Lenses (7-Stop). However, you could consider using a case like the ARRI Camera Assistant Belt Pouch (Large), BH #ARK20013016, or the WANDRD D1 Fanny Pack (Wasatch Green), BH #WAD1FPWG2, to carry several of the filters.
