The Tiffen 77mm Soft Contrast 2 Filter is a contrast reduction filter that darkens highlights while maintaining the density of shadows within a scene. The effect of a light absorbing element within this filter is apparent in highlights without requiring a change in overall exposure. Details within bright areas are made more visible without a similar effect on dark areas. Tiffen Soft Contrast filters are available in grades numbering one through five. Each larger numbered grade corresponds to a stronger effect.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Q: 1. I have the Sony Zeiss 24-70mm F4. It says on the Lens 67mm. Does that mean I need a size 67mm ND Filter to fit?

A: Well as others have indicated, 67 mm is the correct size for the lens, you are asking about. while this is true, some times it is more cost efficient to get a larger size filter and an adaptor ring. When buying my natural density filter, I chose one that fit on the largest diamiter lens in my travel kit, so that I could use the filter on all my lenses, with the only added cost/weight of the adaptors. This also alows for a larger filter to be used on my wider angle lenses, reducing any vignetting that the filter might cause on the wide angle lenses. Vignetting can be a problem on wide angle lenses as the Variable Neutral Density Filter tends to be fairly thick and there for may caused some vignetting.

Q: 2. I am not certain whether I should use a neutral density or polarizing filter for the photography I do.At present, I shoot a lot of landscape, nature, waterfalls, lakes, ponds and close up I wish to shoot photos that are well contrasted and have that jump off the page type of distinct quality. Well saturated photos, vibrant colors, no wash outs are also my hope and objective. Is this level of neutrality serve my objectives. Should the ND and polarizer be graduated?. If so, why? I own a Nikon D90, 3000 and 7000What do you suggest?

A: I would suggest getting a polarizer for the type of image you want. A circular polarizer will saturate blues and enrich color. A circular polarizer is essentially 3 stops of a ND filter as it is, but it is rotate-able. A neutral density filter is more useful in applications where you would want to blur water or shoot wide open for long exposures. Take a look at the B+W 77mm Kaesemann XS-Pro Circular Polarizer MRC Nano Filter, which is one of the highest quality circular polarizers available: http://bhpho.to/1ke87X9

Q: 3. WHAT NM RANGE DOES THIS FILTER DETECT?

A: Blocks all visible light and passes IR light 720 nm and above

Q: 4. I am looking into buying this filter for shooting sunrises and sets where the mountains and forests are very shade compared to the sky. Should I go for something darker or lighter?

A: There is no definitive answer to your question based upon the information provided. Your question depends on the difference in correct exposure value between the mountains/forest and the sky. Each .3 of ND is equal to one stop of light loss. If the difference in exposure values is two stops, go with a graduated ND .6, if it is three stops then use a .9, etc. For best results, keep a few of these filters in your camera bag with varying ND densities.

Q: 5. Hi. What is the transmittance of this filter?

A: 0% transmission in the visual spectrum 90% + in the Infra- Red

Q: 6. Does this filter out UV as well as IR? Is there a light transmission graph for this filter anywhere? My goal is to find a filter that lets in UV (and visible is OK too), but not IR above 650 or 700nm. Thank you!

A: This filter only cuts IR light. For transmission data, please submit a request via https://tiffen.com/pages/contact

Q: 7. Is this a hard edge or a soft edge?

A: soft edge

Q: 8. Will this fit the x100v?

A: The NiSi Allure Soft White Filter (FUJIFILM X100, Silver) should fit on your Fugifilm X100V without an issue.

Q: 9. Can this filter rotate on its own even if the filter thread on my lens is non-rotatable?

A: Yes, the outer ring is rotatable after the filter is fitted to the lens.It can be rotated to any angle.

Q: 10. Is there a way to make them fit in the Rokinon lenses? I heard Rokinon lenses doesn't have a way to add filters.

A: All Tiffen screw in filters require filter threads. We make the VND filter in 52, 58, 62, 67, 72, 77 and 82 mm sizes. We recommend you contact Rokinon for specifications regarding their lenses

The filter met my expectations, producing very good results. Delivery was delayed due to a storm in the New York area, otherwise B & H did its usual fine job getting the package out in perfect condition. I feel this two stop graduated filter will meet most of my needs.

The Graduated Filter is extremely useful for keeping the light from the sky too overpowering, but keeping the rest of the photo at the proper brightness. Highly recommend using this.
