The 30mm f1.4 Dragonfly Lens for Canon EF from IRIX features an optical design based on the IRIX 30mm Cine model, intended for the highly demanding film industry market. The entire optical structure of the lens is identical in both the still and cine versions, designed to emphasize the vividness of the image. This lens features a modern optical design that includes three ultra-low dispersion glass elements, two high reflectance glass elements and one aspherical element. There is a total of 13 elements in 11 groups to provide sharp details, vivid colors, and ultra-low distortion. In addition, the 11-blade design aperture with rounded edges ensures a pleasant and vivid background bokeh. The elements feature Neutrino multicoating for optimal light transmission without lens flare.

The premium construction materials ensure operation in extreme environmental conditions, and a system of seals located in key places of the lens resist moisture and dust, protecting the cleanliness of the mirror chamber and the sensor of the camera. The manual focus design incorporates rear focusing so that the lens does not change dimensions while focusing. A special focusing ring with a characteristic shape is hallmark of IRIX design, and special texturing and properly selected rubber material and the dedicated emboss makes it easy to feel the ring's position. The Focus Lock function allows the focusing ring to be locked in a specific position, especially useful when keeping a specific camera-to-subject distance while zone-focusing, or when keeping perfect focus at infinity in landscape photography or astrophotography.

The IRIX 30mm f/1.4 lens can be controlled directly from the camera, making semi-automatic modes (PASM) and data recording in Exif format available. The use of electronics also enables the lens to be equipped with a focus confirmation system in enabled camera bodies. The camera will report the correct focus setting, either in the form of an icon in the viewfinder or as a sound, when the focus is correctly set.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is the CA as bad as is claimed? I am considering purchasing this lens for a trip to NYC at some point soon.

A: I don't have a sample on hand, but zooming in on anything under f/2 it's pretty obvious. I would also give enough time before your trip to send it for calibration to Sigma. I got the USB dock for free on a B&H sale but was not able to adequately correct it myself. After calibration, focus was pretty spot on with my t6i for stationary subjects. It can struggle a bit for moving. That all being said, if you're looking for a fast lens for a crop sensor for a good price it's a good lens.

Q: 2. Eye autofocus is disabled for me on a6000. It says not available for this lens. Is this expected?

A: This is totaly expected. Check it out this video to learn how to eye focus properly with any lens. https://youtu.be/EroJdGxOkXg .By the way this lens is awesome!!

Q: 3. When mounted on an APS-C camera, will this produce a 45mm focal length? The description describes it as designed for APS-C, but it seems unclear as to if it will actually be 30mm or 45mm when placed on the camera.

A: They give the 45mm length as a 35mm equivalent to help those who are used to full frame cameras. Since this is made for APS-C cameras there is a crop factor due to the smaller sensor size. The crop factor for So y APS-C is 1.5 so the technically correct 30mm lens LOOKS more like a 45mm due to the crop.

Q: 4. What benefits, if any, would there be if I purchased the canon mount and used it on a Fuji XH2S with the metabones speedbooster?

A: The Metabones Canon EF lens to Fuji X-mount adapter would preserve the wide angle of the IRIX 30mm T1.5 Cine Lens as well as boost low light performance by 1 stop when used on crop sensor cameras like the Fuji XH2S. When using the IRIX 30mm lens without a speedbooster the lens would provide a 45mm view. When using the speedbooster the view would be 32mm. Q: 5. Does anyone know the barrel diameter of this lens? Looking to buy this soon and also want to get a cool lux follow focus gear to go along with it.

A: The diameter is 2.55".

Q: 6. Does this lens need electronic communication with the camera to change F stop? Can I use this lens on an adapter without electronic contacts? The adapter has a Nikon F stop dial.

A: Yes. When using the IRIX 30mm f/1.4 Dragonfly Lens for Nikon F, there is no way to control the aperture ring manually and with manual adapters. The aperture of this lens is designed to be controlled electronically, so a manual adapter with an aperture dial would not work. To control the lens' aperture, you would need a lens adapter that allows you to electronically set the aperture on your camera.

Q: 7. I’m curious to know would this work on the blackmagic pocket cinema camera 4K? I’m asking for a friend who just bought and I’d like to surprise them with a cool lens

A: Hi Ryan! Yes this will mount on the Blackmagic 4K.

Q: 8. is focus ring smooth or hard, to focus in manual mode?

A: The focus ring is very smooth. Having a Sony 30mm f/1.8 OSS and this len at the same time, I believe the ring on this len is way smoother.

Q: 9. will this work on bmpcc6k pro?

A: This Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Canon EF-M is not compatible with the Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro.

Q: 10. Does this lens work for a canon 90D?

A: No. The following unit will only accommodate the canon EF/EFS.

This lens blew me away. I used it for some astro time lapses and it was excellent! Very minimal vignetting (like you have to look hard to even see it). No noticeable distortion.  Outstanding value.

While it is a manual lens, you can control the shutter speed and aperture setting through the on camera controls, and all of these settings are recorded in the metadata - just like a Nikon lens would do - so you don’t need to write it down.

It has a focus lock-ring which I had not used before and which I now regard as ESSENTIAL for night sky work - because you can perfect your focus in daylight, and lock it so that it does not accidentally get bumped as one works in darkness.

I know, I know you didn’t buy because it is pretty, but the fact is it is a very beautiful product. It uses a lot of glass so it is heavy which is good.

My only complaint was that it did not have a filter ring so I could put on a filter to protect the front lens. But when I wrote them the sent me a filter holder for the cost of shipping!!!

And that friends, is how they got a five star review.

I purchased it based on its strength as architectural photography lens. I took out the 21mm IRIX last weekend to our park. I was very impressed with its sharpness for landscape photography. Between landscapes and architectural photography usages, this lens is going the get a lot of use.

I purchased this lens to use with a Canon R5 primarily for astrophotography. It communicates with the R5 with an adapter so there is a manual focus target and peaking. After two sessions it seems sharp and lots less coma distortion than another 20mm lens tried. The focus lock has been especially helpful for astro.

This lens takes me back to the 1970s when I first started photography in terms of manual focusing a shot prior to clicking the shutter! Opening the box and holding my new 21mm, I was shocked at its weight. The design and build was excellent. Adapting it to my Nikon z camera, I discovered that the camera displayed when I got the focus correct by the focus indicator turning green, which was a big step up from the good old days. My next surprise was discovering that the lens was working perfectly as if I had a z lens on the camera! However, I was not expecting was just how good this lens is in terms of sharpness and optical quality. Online reviews stated that the distortion level was minimal, which I fully agree. I bought this assuming that it being a manual focus lens only, somehow made it an inferior product compared to my other lenses. Man, was I ever wrong! After using the lens, I now consider it to be one of the better photography purchases I have made this year.
Also, kudos to B&H customer services who quickly resolved a shipping issue that I had getting this lens. While their professionalism was much appreciated, the speed at which they moved was impressive!
