The Wista 45RF is a 4x5 rangefinder camera with a built-in viewfinder, and remains along with the Linhof Technika as the only currently-produced large format rangefinder field cameras with movements.

Wista's collection of sophisticated metal field cameras (the VX, SP & RF) are designed for photographers wanting much more than just a simple field camera.  Gargantuan values in specifications such as the maximum tilt or swing degree are of rather limited in use in the field, for in these regards nearly all cameras provide capacities exceeding both lens coverage and practical need.  But in specifications of rather large importance-front rise/lateral shift, shortest/longest usable focal lengths, the combined capacity for large rear lens barrel diameters with a small lensboard, and fine control of movements, the metal Wistas succeed admirably.

A whopping 56mm of front rise & 40mm of lateral shift is about the best one could hope for from a true field camera, and the Wista RF does so without an enormous lensboard which would consume considerable packing space.  Wooden cameras are lighter, of course, but provide inferior rigidity when used with longer lenses.  If you enjoy a 240mm or 300mm for use in landscape work, the weight is well spent.  Upon the wide angle end of things, you're allowed a rear lens barrel diameter of 80mm.

The 45RF has all the features of the VX and is also a rangefinder-coupled camera cammed to accommodate 135, 150 and 180mm lenses.  The rangefinder cams are designed specifically for Nikon's Nikkor-W lenses, but the triple folding infinity stops can be easily adjusted to accurately use with other brands of 135, 150 & 180mm lenses provided their film-to-flange distance is very close to the Nikkors.  The Wista features an international standard Graflok back, optional extension tracks and extra-long bellows for using telephoto lenses up to 500mm, as well as a sensational combination of bag bellows & dedicated lensboard for the easiest imaginable wideangle photography in a field camera.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Wil this fit a Wisner 4x5 field camera?

A: The FotodioX Pro Right Angle View Finder Hood for 4x5 Wista Camera only fits a few select Wista models and will not work in a Wisner.

Q: 2. where is this camera made? does it use same lens boards as Toyo 45AII?

A: As per our records, this camera is manufactured in Japan. It would use standard 158 x 158mm lens boards from Toyo.

Q: 3. Can one use Leica screw mount lenses?

A: Yes you can with a Leica adapter and it works great. I have used it with my Dads screw mounts Leica lens from the 1950s...

Q: 4. When using a digital back with this camera, how is an exposure made? Is the digital camera set to bulb mode for instance?

A: You can with the correct adapter use different backs on the Cambo WRC-400 Technical Camera. As for exposure it will depend on the back and the shot as to the setting you need to set it to.

Q: 5. I own a Toyo 4x5G that I bought from B&H many years ago. It is in mint condition and I am looking to sell it along with all the film holders, lens boards, polaroid backs (545 and 405), etc. How can I get these items along with so many others appraised? I also have a Silver Anniversary Besseler 23CII Enlarger with Gralab and Time O Lite Timers along with all Darkroom accessories that is also in mint condition. Thanks!

A: For assistance with your inquiry, you would have to contact our Used Photography Department by either e-mailing a href= http://used@bhphotovideo.com, target= _blank used@bhphotovideo.com,/a or you would have to call our buyers at (800) 606-6969 ext. 2700 during business hours and they will give you a quote over the phone.

Q: 7. Is this camera water / dust proof?

A: Definitely not.

Q: 8. Does this camera have a hot shoe and if so does it work with pocket wizards? I looked in the specs and didn't see anything, and the image provided doesn't show the top of the camera. Thanks

A: No, the Toyo-View 4x5 45GII View Camera does not have a hot shoe. The camera has a accessory cold shoe on the top of the front standard, but the sync terminal for large format cameras are built into the lens. As such, you may place the PocketWizard in the cold shoe, but you would need a 1/8 (3.5 mm) miniphone to PC male sync cable to connect the PocketWizard to the PC sync terminal on your lens.

Q: 9. What is the widest lens you can mount

A: The Voigtlander 10mm lens. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1274719-REG/voigtlander_ba334a_10mm_f_5_6_ultra_wide_heliar.html

Q: 10. The two answers to the previous compatibility question are unclear. Would this finder fit my Wista 45 VX?

A: Unfortunately, the FotodioX Pro Right Angle View Finder Hood for 4x5 Wista Camera will not fit the Wista 45VX.

The strength of this body is that it has expanded camera movements, more than a usual field camera. It has wider range of camera movements that was great for the look I was seeking with getting a cool Bokeh, or depth of focus with a wider range of blurred backgrounds. Like all large format cameras, it's a bit fussy to set up, but let's face it, it's not a point and shoot camera, it's a camera you learn to be fastidious and precise with. You slow things down and get it right with film so you don't have to do a lot of post processing work in photoshop. The rangefinder is right on target and makes shooting faster, especially if you do a simple shot that only needs infinity with a standard lens. It's very sturdy modular system that has lots of changeable parts.

I started with a black Nikon FM2, which is one of the best Nikon bodies in my opinion, and many years later bought an Leica M6. The M6 is already more than enough and I keep it. The MP has always been my dream camera. It goes beyond the M6 in its built materials. It's solid, a tank, extremily reliable. The kind of thing you'll pass to your son and he to his son. I prefer shooting with with rangefinder, that's why I moved to Leica. But these days I shot a roll with the FM2 and it was so frustating to my old memories. The camera is a lot made of plastic parts and looked fragile, loosen. The MP has everything locked in, tight, the M6 doesn't come close to that feeling. I'm not talking about the M3 because it doesn't suit me, since I shoot with 28mm and 35mm lenses. Thank you, Leica, for still making lifetime film cameras.

I really can not think of any other 35mm camera that looks, feels and handles like this body. It is an absolute dream to use and feels like it could never fail you. Its heavy and solid in the hand, just the way cameras should be and every movement on the camera feels as fine tuned as it possibly could be. Its the most simple camera I own and one that I use for all of my observational personal work where ever I go. it does not get in my way while you make pictures. its simplicity and build quality is unmatched. It is an artists dream. It doesnt get any better for a purists needs. Also the lenses that it uses yeild the best resolution in the 35mm format. Its the best system you can purchase if you love rangefinders. People say they are expensive but I dont see them as expensive at all. They hold value and they last a life time. Its my tool to last my life long passion of photography. Thats why I purchased one.

I am a photographer with a broad range of interests from landscapes to table top work. I bought a Wista 45SP in the early 1980s to replace my SinarP. It has performed admirably, it is rigid in design and precise in it shifts, tilts and drops. Front and rear standards are strong enough for the heaviest of lenses. It is durable and light enough for short overland journeys. It uses the universal Linhof/Wista lens boards and accepts extension rails and extended bellows. Wista makes superb cameras that meet the demands of all my work.

Leica MP is simply the best, there is no way around it. However, buying my first Leica with BHphoto is probably the best decision I’ve had. I had experience with Adorama but BHphoto customer service is far superior. No return return fees (Adorama does make you pay return fees), exchange/return convenience, and fast shipping. If you decide between the two, BHphoto would be the best option as it gives you a peace of mind knowing that they will take care their customer. I had an issue with the first order and had to exchanged it. I called them and explained the situation and they exchanged it with no questions asked. Simply the best customer service by far. It reminds me of REI customer service (if you live in PNW you’ll know what I’m talking about). They have a customer for life. Thank you, BHphoto!
