Hoya Alpha Ii Circular Polarizer Filter (55mm)

The 55mm alpha II Circular Polarizer Filter from Hoya has a slimmer frame and better glass than the original alpha CPL. Leaving out premium features like multi-coating, optical glass, and a hardened, waterproof top layer, the alpha series is designed as an entry-level CPL filter for those starting out in photography.

The alpha II CPL gives scenic photography more punch by darkening blue skies so that white clouds and foliage stand out. Light rays become polarized when traveling through moisture and pollution, as well as when they reflect off non-metallic surfaces such as glass or bodies of water. A polarizing filter absorbs polarized light and helps remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces. By removing these reflections, this filter also increases color saturation, especially in leaves and foliage.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I cannot find any objective comparison between the Hoya HD3 Circular Polarizer and the NXT Plus other than brain wash marketing. Would someone help finding information? I can hardly justify $200 in a filter even though money is not a problem.

A: The HD3 has 16-Layer Nano Multicoating

Q: 2. Is there any noticeable color casting with this filter?

A: The Hoya alpha II Circular Polarizer Filter doesn't have any noticeable color casting.

Q: 3. Will this fit a Leica Q2 with lens hood installed?

A: The Hoya 49mm HD3 Circular Polarizer Filter cannot be used on the Leica Q2 at the same time as the lens hood.

Q: 4. Hoya 82mm HD3 Circular Polarizer Filter and Hoya 82mm EVO Antistatic Circular Polarizer Filter. Which one is better and why? Why HD3 so expensive? Is the photos will be different?

A: The HD3 has harder coatings, and uses a higher quality polarization film.

Q: 5. What is the advantage or differencebetween a non-coated polarizer vs a multi coated?

A: The non coated polarizer will scratch much more easily. Since the price differential is nominal when you consider the polarizer cost, it is worth it. Especially, if you plan on keeping the camera and the lens, it will extend the useful life.

Q: 6. Is this the same filter as the Hoya NXT Circular Polarizer filter, just updated?

A: According to Hoya, the NXTPlus filters are improved over the NXT-series because they "use better glass, an improved multi-coating process, more multi-coated layers for better light transmission, AND add a new 'Waterproof' Top-coat to repel water quickly away from the surface which makes it easier to clean and more fun to use." Q: 7. How is this filter different from the Hoya filter kit, which has three filters for $69? This filter alone costs more than that.

A: Thinner profile and most likely different optical glass technology. I am not certain about the glass. I have not used the filter kit.

Q: 8. I plan on using the filter on a drone, and the gimbal on the drone requires a weight range for filters to maintain balance. Does anybody know how much the filter weights (in grams, if possible)? Thanks!

A: .9 oz, according to my kitchen scale. Or 25 grams.

Q: 9. I am interested in purchasing filters: polarized filter as well as a ND filter. There are so many to choose from - any suggestions?Hoya vs B&W ? What specifications should I compare? I am prepared to spend the extra money for the quality that best suits my current (beginner) and future needs. Camera Nikon D750 lens Nikkor 24-120.

A: I use both Hoya and B&W filters and are equally satisfied with them. Don't use polarizing filters for wide angle lenses.

Q: 10. Can this be used with a Canon Powershot SX420 is ?

A: No, this filter is not compatible with the SX420.
