Hoya Alpha Ii Circular Polarizer Filter (77mm)

The 77mm alpha II Circular Polarizer Filter from Hoya has a slimmer frame and better glass than the original alpha CPL. Leaving out premium features like multi-coating, optical glass, and a hardened, waterproof top layer, the alpha series is designed as an entry-level CPL filter for those starting out in photography.

The alpha II CPL gives scenic photography more punch by darkening blue skies so that white clouds and foliage stand out. Light rays become polarized when traveling through moisture and pollution, as well as when they reflect off non-metallic surfaces such as glass or bodies of water. A polarizing filter absorbs polarized light and helps remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces. By removing these reflections, this filter also increases color saturation, especially in leaves and foliage.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Hi everyone, besides of the fact that this filter makes your pictures pop, does it also protect the lens as well? (The lens I have is the Zeiss Batis 25mm f/2 with Sony A6000) Thank you.

A: Yes it does protect. Excellent alternative if you don't mined the light reduction

Q: 2. Is the .3 stop light loss number in the specifications accurate?

A: I suspect that there is some semantics involved. However, I find the in my terms the factor is 1.3. By this I mean for example: holding the shutter speed constant, I get a reading of f9 without the filter, with the filter on and adjusted for maximum effect it will require a aperture of f5.6 for an equivalent exposure. I was mislead by the point three as well, but it is still better than the 2.5 or a bit more that conventional filters of this type yield.Hope this helps.

Q: 3. Would this circular polarizer cause vignetting on the low end of a 15-35mm zoom?

A: Due to its relatively thin profile, it should not cause vignetting on a 15-35mm. However, in the event there is some, it would be very, very minor.

Q: 4. Is it OK to install on a lens already has the T* coating? What's going to happen if you double the T* coating?

A: Yes, it's fine. It would only be problematic if the T* coating itself had a distinct color cast, in which case the white balance would need adjusting. However, the coating itself improves light transmission pretty evenly across the spectrum, so you'll only notice the normal color cast of the polarizing layers -- which is pretty neutral on the Zeiss. I think only the Breakthrough Photography polarizers are (or may!) be more neutral.

Q: 5. Hoya 82mm HD3 Circular Polarizer Filter and Hoya 82mm EVO Antistatic Circular Polarizer Filter. Which one is better and why? Why HD3 so expensive? Is the photos will be different?

A: The HD3 has harder coatings, and uses a higher quality polarization film.

Q: 6. What material is the ring made of? Brass, Aluminum, or other?

A: The ZEISS filter housing is made from aluminum. For more details about these filters, please visit: https://www.zeiss.com/consumer-products/int/photography/accessories/filter.html.

Q: 7. Will this work on the canon 24-70 rf f/2.8 L usm lens?

A: As the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L IS USM Lens has 82mm front filter threads, yes, the ZEISS 82mm Carl ZEISS T* Circular Polarizer Filter would be compatible for use on the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L IS USM Lens.

Q: 8. For this 52mm filter--is the front thread diameter also 52mm? Thanks!

A: The front thread is 52mm.

Q: 9. Can you use the lens hood on a Nikkor Z 24-70mm f2.8 S lens with this CP filter?

A: You can use them together but it will be difficult to adjust the polarizer.

Q: 10. Will this filter fit with the Sony 70-200 GM Hood?

A: Yes, you will be able to attach a filter with the lens hood on.

If you shoot outdoors in good sunlight, you MUST have a good polarizing filter. The colors come alive outside, cuts down on the glare, and protects the lens. Great purchase

I've used other polarizing filters and they produce a soft focus however, hoya produces a crisp focus. The saturation of colours is amazing. I usually dont put more glass in front of my sensor but this is the exception.

My family went on a Caribbean cruise and I compared the results with and without using my new polarizer glass filter. What a difference it made in the water and sky colors.
