Im not sure precisely how it alters the close focus ratio in terms of a ratio, but of course it i creasess it because otherwise you wouldnt be able to focus on the object in a macro way--- if your question is, does it distort or alter the look of the focal length my answer would be no, but my experience is that it facilotates different looks with different lenses (tested 28-200 and zooms as well), my advice would be to experiment--- The only con I sont believe is any fault of the device--- that is that you generally pick/up a limited depth of field inherent to the close macro effect, which you may or may not like working with or around....

Search the web and you'll find plenty of calculations about the actual magnification ratios you can achieve with your lenses. I do not regret buying these cheap but efficient extension tubes.
