The SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex MF Lens is a 400mm catadioptric optical design super telephoto lens with a fixed f/8 aperture, which offers a compact alternative to standard telephoto lenses. It's lightweight and compact design fits easily inside a pocket or small bag and is suitable for travel, wildlife, and outdoor photography.

  • Manual focus catadioptric optical design telephoto lens with fixed f/8 aperture, which is compatible with select camera focus peaking systems and in-body multi-axis advanced image stabilization systems.
  • Multi-layer anti-reflection coating for efficient light intake and reduced flare, plus high-reflectivity silvered coating and a protective antioxidant layer on the back side of mirrored surfaces for long performance life.
  • Minimum focusing distance of 45.3" and magnification 0.4x can capture small objects, while the 400mm focal length reduces the possibility of casting a shadow on the subject.
  • Catadioptric design and construction creates a smooth and unusual donut-shaped bokeh.
  • Wide focus ring provides smooth rotation range of 270°.

Extending the effective focal length of the Tokina SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex MF Lens, the 2x Extender increases the lens's magnification by 2x for a narrower field of view. In effect, this extender doubles the effective focal length of the lens, turning your 400mm lens into an 800mm optic.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. will the 2x extender drop the aperture say make the f/8 into a f/16?

A: Yes. A 2x teleconverter loses 2 stops of light, so an f/2.8 lens drops down to a wide aperture of f/5.6.

Q: 2. Was a t-mount adapter supposed to be included with this lens?

A: The Tokina SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex MF Lens with 2x Extender Kit for Nikon Z comes with the Tokina 2X Extender TA-020 for T-mount, a universal optical tele-converter. The 2X Extender TA-020 adopts T-mount standard and comes between the lens and mount adapter.

Q: 3. Does this come with a protective case?

A: The Tokina SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex MF Lens with 2x Extender Kit does not come with a case.

Q: 4. For the MFT mount, does this 400mm with the 2x extender make this an equivalent of 400mm x 2 (extender) x 2 (MFT crop)?

A: Yes, using the Tokina SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex MF Lens with 2x Extender Kit for Micro Four Thirds on a micro 4/3rds camera is like a 1600mm lens.

Q: 5. Last question, I think. I currently use, for "distance" photo, a 55-200 Nikkor. Going from this to this 400mm, is it too much of a difference regarding quality and distance? (not sure how much difference there is between 200 and 400mm). Additionally, in image the lens seems "small", when comparing to vivitar 500mm. Is it that size or you have to "open" it?

A: This lens would be double the magnification of your 55-200mm at the 200mm end. This lens would be more compact that the Vivitar 500mm lens. Please feel free to reach out to us directly via Live Chat or e-mail to askbh@bhphoto.com with any other questions you may have.

Q: 6. With the 2X extender attached, I assume this becomes an f/16 lens setup at 800mm?

A: Yes, this Tokina SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex MF Lens when used with its 2X Extender would make the maximum aperture set for f/16.

Q: 7. I don't see the Nikon D700 listed under the compatibility list even though it uses the F Type lens...is the D700 not compatible for some reason, or only with limited function unlike the other models listed?

A: Although the manufacturer has not tested the Tokina SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex MF Lens with 2x Extender Kit for Nikon F with the D700, there should be no issue using them together.

Q: 8. How good is the image quality?

A: As of the date/time of this reply, the final production version of the Tokina SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex MF Lens for Canon RF have not yet begun to ship. However, from the sample images listed on Tamron's website, the Tokina SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex MF Lens for Canon RF does appear to have good image quality performance.

Q: 9. Is the "donut-shaped bokeh" what we otherwise know as "circles of confusion"?

A: No. The sharpest point of focus on a camera's sensor would be a single point on the camera's sensor. "Circles of confusion" describes the small area of what our eyes would perceive to still be in "acceptable focus," but which do not fall as single points of focus on the sensor. They are circles slightly larger than a single dot (point), but which are small enough to still be perceived as in focus. Bokeh describes the quality of the out-of-focus area in an image, so "donut-shaped bokeh" are not perceived as being in focus and is not considered circles of confusion. --- The distinctive shape of the bokeh from mirror lenses comes from the design of the lens and the placement of the reflecting mirror in the center of the image. Light enters the optical tube, passes a small mirror, and strikes a concave mirror at the rear of the tube. The light is focused back toward the small mirror and reflected back through a hole in the concave mirror where the camera or eyepiece is mounted. The result is bokeh with a bright edge and a relatively dark center (similar to a donut).

Q: 10. It's Manual Focus lens. But can I do BIF with this lens in some situations with good sharp images result (like big birds or birds of prey hovering)?

A: It would be very difficult but doable. Would definitely need a tripod and a fluid head. It would take a lot of practice, so it depends how much you want to practice until you get good results.

Though it's in US, delivery is fast and smooth to Singapore. Yet to try the lens but it's super light on my Z.

I got this lens to pair with my Nikon Z50. Knowing it is a FX lens on a DX body, the 1.5x crop factor on this 400 mm lens gives it incredible reach, although I am hesitant to call it 'effectively 600 mm'. I have taken rather sharp shots with a tripod of subjects ~2 miles away, and can resolve the basic skyline ~5 miles away at night with long exposures. Indeed there is 0 chromatic aberration, and I've counted ~4 rings in the point spread function from a bright light source at effective infinite distance, which is very impressive given it's a $250 lens. The bokeh is really something special, and I sometimes find myself taking shots intentionally out of focus for the artistic appeal which as far as I know, is not easy to recreate digitally. The lens is a bit heavier than I expected, but I'm OK with it given the metal construction - it feels solidly built. My one gripe is that the macro quality is OK, but not amazing. I thought I could get away with not purchasing extension tubes and just using this for macro photography, but something which I haven't precisely identified yet gives the photos a surprising amount of softness. Possibly, this could be from the fact that its a manual focus lens and I'm just not nailing it every time, which, although it is my problem, will likely be your problem too! I enjoy the 270 degree throw for focusing, but because it is so sensitive, it still takes some getting used to.
