The 3-stop, 55mm ProND EX ND Filter from Hoya reduces the amount of light passing through the lens. When shooting video outdoors, you can set shutter speeds to match your frame rate while maintaining the depth-of-field you want. When shooting moving objects, you can achieve a motion blur that makes the image look more cinematic. For photography applications, the filter lets you use longer exposures or achieve a shallow depth-of-field in bright sunlight.

The ProND EX ND filter uses Hoya's ACCU-ND technology to prevent color shift in order to deliver consistent image quality. ACCU-ND ensures an equal reduction of light in both visible and IR spectrums so that you don't experience color shift when shooting in different outdoor conditions. The filter features 55mm threading on both the front and rear sides. Additional ND filters can be stacked on the front, or you can attach a threaded lens cap or other filter.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can I use this on my Nikon wide-angle lens 10-24mm without vignette?

A: Most likely, no. The rim on this filter being the variable midel, is much wider than a standard ND would be. You definitely need to find a fixed stop ND for a wide angle. Even with that, you may still have slight vignetting at the 10mm end.

Q: 2. Does this filter have hard stops?

A: So as not to confuse with my prior answer, there are no intermediate stops but yes there are stops at each end.

Q: 3. What is the widest focal length this can be used on with no vignetting?

A: I have the filter on my 24-70mm/f2.8 lens. So the widest is 24mm. I did not see any vignetting. I am very happy with this filter.

Q: 4. Can someone confirm if this 95mm still allows for the Sony 28-135mm factory hood to be mounted with the filter on? Thank you!

A: It does not allow for the factory hood to mount - it is too big for the hood to slide over the filter.

Q: 5. Will I be able to use my LX100 auto lens cap or JJC auto lens cap with this?

A: You will be able to use lens caps with this filter, yes.

Q: 6. Is this front threaded?

A: Yes, this filter has 77mm front threads.

Q: 7. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1081648-REG/zeiss_2059_812_front_lens_cap_86mm.html (Can this lens cap be used?)

A: B+W 82mm XS-Pro Digital ND Vario MRC-Nano has an 86mm front threaded diameter. ZEISS 86mm Front Lens Cap would be perfect for your filter.

Q: 8. The specs for the B+W 95mm Xs-Pro ND Vario filter show that the front filter size is also 95mm. However, for all other sizes the front filter size is larger than the back side that screws on to the lens. Can someone please confirm that the front threads for the 95mm model are also 95mm as in the specs or wider like the picture suggests? Thanks.

A: definitely not!! the rear thread of the filter is 95mm, however the front thread of the filter is 105mm

Q: 9. Can I use these filters on both a digital and a film 35mm?

A: Yes Hoya 55mm HMC Close-Up Filter Set II (+1, +2, and +4) is compatible with film and digital cameras that accept 55mm filters.

Q: 10. Is this a hard stop filter where it goes from 2 to 5 and then it can't proceed further ?

A: The rotation of the filter is smooth. It does not click as you rotate it. It also stops rotating once you reach the maximum or minimum density.

Filter works as designed. Photos I have taken with the filter are razor sharp!

Works great for viewing the sun on my astromodified Nikon D800 DSLR. Under this filter I use a visible passband filter that also transmits hydrogen alpha transitions at 656nm, or my infrared filter, to look at the sun's surface features. Early results show the surface features that interest me, though since the contrast is limited, significant image processing is required. (You need a 1 to subnanometer narrowband filter to get great contrast, but these are unavailable for 77mm filter rings, and likely $10,000 if ever available!) Liveview manual or autofocussing usually works even though the imaged sun is really too bright for my comfort - I think an additional two-stop NDF or variable NDF will solve this. While I'm still learning how to optimise results with this filter, this system will work great for future solar eclipses!
