The Jensen Vintage C12K and N12K IR Library for TH-U SuperCabinet from Overloud is a SuperCabinet IR library, which captures the smooth and full-bodied tone of the vintage Jensen C12K and N12K 35W ceramic speakers in 1x12 and 2x12 configurations, and captured by 19 microphones for an impressive 1824 total impulse responses. Speakers long respected for their mixture of vintage tone and modern power handling, this IR library is a great choice for those seeking versatile options than can sit equally well in both classic and modern playing styles.

The 19 mics were used to record in four different horizontal positions, two distances, and two angles for a total of 16 IRs each. Since the tone may seem too bright for modern uses, Overloud includes a convenient remastered version of each IR, effectively doubling the number of available IRs, utilizing finely tuned top-end response for increased warmth in more contemporary settings. Designed exclusively for SuperCabinet, the Jensen Vintage C12K and N12K IR Library is an ideal choice for those seeking powerful and dynamic character in an affordable package. Blend and create custom cabinet tones and export IRs in WAV format for use in external IR loaders and modelers.

While not strictly a vintage reissue, the C12K is the first original design that Jensen developed in the early ‘90s. It is tonally inspired by the classic vintage ceramic Jensen, but with a substantially stronger voice, full, solid bass, and smooth top end. The C12K immediately became one of the speakers of choice for Fender, used in a myriad of its world-selling models. Vintage tone with modern power handling and dynamics are the key virtues of the C12K, in the classic 1x12 and 2x12 Open Back enclosures, typical of the contemporary Fender combo amps, each captured with 19 mics in 16 positions each.

The N12K was developed in conjunction with Fender as the speaker for the new Fender Tone Master Deluxe Reverb and Twin Reverb. It delivers the same sound, character and dynamic feel of the classic Jensen C12K, with half the weight thanks to the exclusive Jensen neodymium-magnet design (the same magnet used in the Tornado series). The N12K exhibits full-bodied tone with a hint of a more modern, transparent lower midrange, along with the same, remarkable headroom and just the right amount of treble, to sound clear and even. The cabinet selection is the same as the C12K—1x12 and 2x12 open back, with 19 mics and 16 positions.

This library also includes the remastered version of all the IRs. The vintage Jensen speakers were designed mainly for clean tones. The maximum overdrive achievable back in those days was generated by the amplifier's natural clipping and compression and by some of the earlier fuzz pedals. Those speakers were voiced for sparkly, shimmering treble response, with a remarkable amount of energy well over 6 kHz to be coupled with the warm-sounding circuits and the thin resonant cabinets of the era. The IRs of the Vintage Jensen Speakers behave exactly as expected: bright, clear, and detailed.

In the modern world, especially with high-gain tones rich in harmonic overtones, energy in the treble range may occasionally turn in an overly bright and aggressive tone. To further expand the possible applications of these historic speakers, Overloud decided to offer all the Vintage Jensen IRs in a remastered version, where the top-end response is finely tuned to be warmer and less prominent, making it more suitable for contemporary higher-gain applications. This creates a sort of virtually aged tone that offers a whole new range of sounds for every application. All the IRs in the library are effectively doubled when counting the remastered versions, opening up new possibilities to the player beyond the original hardware.

The microphones used during the capture sessions for this IR library are:

  • AKG C12
  • AKG C414
  • AKG C414 XLS
  • Audio Technica AT4033
  • Beyerdynamic M160
  • Coles 4038
  • Electro Voice RE16
  • Groove Tubes MD1
  • Neumann KM84

  • Sennheiser E609
  • Sennheiser MD421
  • Shure B52
  • Shure SM57
  • Shure SM58
  • Shure SM81

Every microphone has been moved to 4 different horizontal position (Cap, Cap Edge, Cone, and Cone Edge), two distances and two angles, for a total of 16 IRs each. All the measurements have been repeated for each cabinet in the library, and all IRs have been phase aligned, so they can be blended without phase cancellation.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. The description states "round" but the photo appears to be a rectangle. I plan to use this with RRS BH 55 and Wimberley WH 200 heads. Is this the correct dovetail plate? Does anyone know why the shape changed?

A: This plate is rounded on the edges in order to match up with the rounded base on a ball head.

Q: 2. Does this work with an A7 Mk II?

A: It works fine with the Sony A7s. Should also work generel with Sony Cameras. Subject not on the IR Controller. The settings are in the SYRP genie!

Q: 5. Will it work with any camera? Why is there model specific plates for example REBD850BP?

A: This is a universal plate for all cameras and there are camera specific plates. Some cameras don't have dedicated plates and so there are universal plates to use, also some folks have multiple cameras, instead of getting a bunch of camera specific plates, they can just get a universal plate that will work with all of their cameras.

Q: 6. How do you make it stand? Does it have lean against something? Or does it need the frame support bar?

Q: 10. Is it able to be adapted to the clamp of Gitzo 3382 DQ ball head? The safety screw position on the clamp of 3382 is bias from center line a little bit, so need to confirm this feasibility.

A: The safety screw on the Gitzo 3382 QD can be retracted to fit plates that do not utilize this feature.
