Designed & manufactured in Japan, the 77mm MM4 77 GA ED Spotting Scope from Opticron, featuring the HDF ED optical system, delivers a new benchmark for resolution and color contrast and comfortably outperforms older Opticron 80mm models. What is more remarkable is the size and weight of the overall package. The MM4 77 GA ED is just 12.4" long and weighs 44 oz fully armored. These figures read like a 65mm, which cannot deliver the light transmission or apparent resolution of this 80mm class device. Compatible with SDL, HDF T and HR eyepieces, this scope allows existing owners to use eyepieces from other Opticron models.

Q: 1. Hey there,Questions...1. Can you attach this to a DSLR camera?2. I noticed there are some 1.25 lens attachments that have extra zoom... maybe a stupid question, as I'm buying this as gift, but does that extra zoom, give you an overall further zoom on the scope? We're looking at this for a travel astronomy telescope.thanks!!

A: To answer your questions.1. Not as it comes out of the box. It is possible to attach this to a DSLR but you would need an adapter to go from the 1.25 on the scope to whatever lens attachment your DSLR uses.2. With this scope you have to buy an eyepiece. The eyepieces come in fixed power and zoom from a variety of manufactures. Any zoom lens is going to have a certain range of magnifications it can produce, for example if it can zoom from 2x to 6x the lens is capable of a 3x zoom (this is a non-technical way of stating this). If another lens can zoom from 2x to 10x it has a 5x zoom. An extra zoom, sometimes called an extended zoom, sometimes called an wide range zoom, will generally give a wider range of magnifications than a standard zoom. To find out what magnifications a certain lens will provide you need to see what the minimum and maximum points it will produce are. These are not given in powers magnification since that varies depending on the objective size of the scope so you either compare mm points if they are in the same general area of magnification or do a bit of math to see what they produce when mounted to this specific scope body.Hope that helps. I use mine for travel astronomy as well as for land use and am quite happy with it.

Q: 2. working temperatures ?

A: Buy a high quality fixed eyepieces such as the ones referenced above. Stay away from zoom eyepieces (image quality is not as good, in my humble opinion. Spend more money and get several fixed eyepieces--one that will let you get you fairly close and that will provide a wider field of view, and one that will enable you to get much closer and that will give you a much narrower fov. With this scope, you should have no problem using a high power ep to get up close and see great detail. (Also make sure you get and use a very sturdy tripod.)

Q: 3. Does it have field flattener?

A: There is no field flattener designed for then Pentax PF-80ED 80mm Spotting Scope

Q: 4. Can the Pentax PF-65ED II be used to view the moon and stars ?

A: Yes , for casual viewing

Q: 5. Will this item accept filters… and if so, what size?

A: The Nikon Monarch 20-60x82 ED Spotting Scope (Angled Viewing) has 86 mm filter threads.

Q: 6. I have a Nikon D610, what kind of adaptor I can use to attach it to Pentax PF-80ED-A? Thanks.

A: As I have a Pentax DSLR I bought the PF-CA35 which replaces the eyepiece and is Pentax k-mount direct to the camera body. I think you can then get a k-mount to Nikon ring and that might work, hope that helps some

Q: 7. Would the TeleVue 40mm Plossl eyepiece focus OK with this scope?

A: Yes, the Tele Vue Plossl 40mm eyepiece will fit in the Pentax scope. The Pentax scope can use any 1.25 eyepiece. But it hasn't been tested to our knowledge, so your results may vary.

Q: 8. Where is this scope made?

A: According to the information we have, our current inventory's Country of Origin is Japan. Please be aware this can change over the product's production life without notice.

Q: 9. Will the TeleVue 40mm Plossl eyepiece focus properly with this spotting scope?

I was looking for a quality spotting scope that offered some flexibility with lense options for economy but has the quality of a higher end scope. The pentax scope had good reviews all over the web and B&H offered the best price and included a tripod. If you're looking for good value you found it. For those looking for a zoom eyepiece for $60. you can get a Meade 8-24mm zoom 7-element / 4-group lense for this scope. That's value added without spending $200-300 on the pentax zoom.

I bought this scope for birding exclusively. It produces crisp and clear images with excellent color fidelity. It is compact and light weight and I like the fact you can use standard 1.25 inch eyepieces of your choosing. I even like the ring/eyepiece tightener in this scope as well.

I was looking for a very portable scope for birding and I am glad I selected the 65EDA II. It's extremely light and the optics are great. I have used it with both a Televue 32mm plossl and a 13mm Nagler for birding and the views have been very pleasing. I like that you can use any 1.25 inch eyepiece in this scope. The free included tripod also works fine with this scope. Great price and prompt shipping from B&H.

In regards to use and performance this is the best value in optics out there. Price points beyond this venerable, time tested optic will give rapid diminishing returns in performance. This is a huge scope in small package, I have used top tier Pentax lenses in the past, I was surprised, this is the best Pentax glass I have ever seen, right up there with my Zeiss and Meopta glass, maybe better.

I looked at many reviews trying to decide what spotting scope would best fit my needs and that would also possibly work for astronomy purposes hence the 1.25 eyepiece interchangeability. I obtained a Vixen NLV 8-24mm zoom and WOW, this scope surprised me with the clarity and brightness. Unfortunately, I now need some quality fixed eyepieces and a good telescope! Gotta love it...

Still getting to know the scope, but very impressed so far. It's lightweight, very easy to focus, and will be easy to take along for hiking.

I had this spotting scope many years ago and later regretted letting it go, so I repurchased it recently, and was not disappointed to see it was as good as I remembered. I already had a nice 8-24mm zoom lens for it and it makes a great compact, travel scope. Optically, it's a very good performer (as an Astronomer, I had to turn it onto Epsilon Lyra which showed the tight components split quite reasonably with a Nagler 2-4mm zoom lens). I took this and a light-weight tripod to the top of Enchanted Rock where I got fantastic views of the Hill Country. Not all 1.25 eyepieces are necessarily going to come to focus with this scope - my 8-24mm Hyperion Zoom only just barely focusses to infinity, so a bit more in-focus travel would be desirable, but that's a small quip.
