This pack of 14 x 18" Warm White 4-Ply 100% Museum Board from Archival Methods contains 25 boards that are 1/16" thick. The board is designed for matting, mounting and preservation of fine prints, precious documents, as well as for traditional and digital photography. The 4-ply thickness is ideal for window mats and mat backing, creates a separation between artwork and glazing, and provides a flat, supportive backing.

The boards are acid- and lignin-free and use alkaline or neutral sizing. No brightening agents are used and no yellow cast is present. All boards are buffered with calcium carbonate to ensure that a polluted environment won't cause paper's pH value to decrease with age.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is the backing board included in the package?

A: Yes, however be sure to know if the image opening on the matte is the right size for your print. You loose about an inch. If you compose full frame there could be a problem.

Q: 2. How thick is this board exactly? I'm looking for something to dry mount ink jet photographs.

A: Hi Brittany -- I use this for mounting traditional photos. It is not rigid, it will bend, but it is solid enough to support your prints as long as you mat and frame them. I wouldn't use it for mounting prints without a mat.Hope this helps.Russ

Q: 3. do they come with a protective sleeve?

A: No they are just ready to frame.

Q: 4. Is the surface smooth, like hot press, or slightly pebbly, like cold press?

A: These boards have a smooth surface.

Q: 5. Regarding Archival Methods Bright White Pre-Cut Exhibition Mat (18 x 24 for 12 x 18 Print, 5-Pack) B&H # ARPM12181824 MFR # 48-018...I'm purchasing this for a 12x18 image, but I would prefer to have an opening of 11.5 x 17.5...I'm afraid that the actual opening of the board would cut off the corners of the composition that is vital...?

A: I have purchased these mats and have been satisfied. The openings are close to 11.5 x 17.5 . Maybe slightly smaller because of the bevel cut. The one I measured was off by less than 1/8 on either dimension.

Q: 6. These are for a dry mounting press?

A: The Archival Methods 11 x 14" 2-Ply 100% Cotton Museum Board can be used in a dry-mount press.

Q: 7. Is 8x10 the size of the back board or the size of the window? I am thinking the size of the back board, but would like to be sure. Thanks.

A: Its the size of the whole board. There are no windows.

Q: 8. Which kind of tape should I use with this product (to close the mat)? Thanks!

A: I use Scotch double sied removable scrapbooking tape. It is photo safe and conforms to ASTM D4236 and ISO 18916. It comes in a roll (in a scotch tape like dispenser) 1.2 in x 300 in. The removal of the top protective backing is a bit of an art. Since the mats have hinges, you need not worry about that. Lineco makes self adhesive hinging tissue. Can go to a hobby store and purchase these.

Q: 9. will an 11x14 print fit inside?

A: Archival Methods Archival White Paper (11 x 14", 100 Sheets) is separate sheets of 11x14 size archival paper.

Q: 10. What's the opening size for Archival Methods Bright White Pre-Cut Exhibition Mat (18 x 24 for 12 x 18 Print, 5-Pack) B&H # ARPM12181824 MFR # 48-018 ?

A: 11.5 x 17.5 (29.2 x 44.5 cm)

I bought a pack of this matboard to try out and see how I liked it. It seems to meet all archival requirements as compared to Bainbridge Alpha Rag, which I believe is the gold standard. Nice surface color and texture for the white, which is all I've tried. This is more like an eggshell white in tone, which is very complimentary for my black and white print style. I won't look further for additional colors and sizes.

This is good quality stuff. I bought it because I was looking for a high quality, archival backing for matted images. I use 4 ply for the front, and two ply on the back for my hinged mat jobs. Pearl white is slightly off-white, but since this was used strictly for backing, it didn't bother me. It is acid-free, and that was what I was looking for. Cheaper than using 4 ply for front and back.

Pearl white is slightly yellow, but that was okay for my purposes. I used this for backing on a hinged, mat frame. It was ideal because it was cheaper than using 4 ply, and since it is backing, the color doesn't really matter.
