Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Has anyone tried fitting this lens in the Nikon CL-M2 case? (The case description says it is primarily for 70-200mm or 300mm Nikons)

A: The Nikon CL-M2 Lens Case (Black) is designed to hold the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4D IF-ED Lens which is 3.54 x 8.76" / 90 x 222.5 mm. The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens is 3.76 x 7.99" / 95.5 x 203 mm. While we cannot test this combination, it is our opinion that there is no issue as to fitting.

Q: 2. Is this a US version?

A: B&H sells both USA and Import versions. The Import version will be clearly marked on the web page. If there is no indication, it is a USA version.

Q: 3. Does this lens work with the F5?

A: Yes

Q: 4. Hey I am looking for a longer reach for wildlife and birds would the 80-400 be a good choice for a D 90?

A: Yes, this would be a great lens option to use for birding and wildlife shots. I also recommend the Sigma 150-500mm lens if you need further reach. See the link below for details:http://bhpho.to/1cXdSQ4

Q: 5. What is the length of the this lens with the Hood attached and the lens at it's shortest length?

A: The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens at the widest zoom with the hood attached is approxemelty 12.2 inches long.

Q: 6. Which third party tripod collar is recommended/available for this lens?

A: The Kirk NC-80-400GN is a recommended collar for this lens. You can find it using the following link: http://bhpho.to/1afWycF.

Q: 7. Will this lens work with Nikon D7200?

A: Yes. Since you have a DX sensor, the lens will actually give you a range of 120-600.

Q: 8. Will this lens work with Nikon AF -S Teleconverter TC-14E III?

A: Nikon says that the AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G and the AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E III are compatible. It will depend on the camera you have if this combination will auto focus. If you camera can focus at f/ 8, you are good. If you have one of these, you are set. Df, D4, D4S, D5, D500, D600, D610, D750, D800, D800E, D810, D850, D7100, D7200, D7500.

Q: 9. I have a Nikon D500 and wondered how this lens would be in low light for birding at all focal lengths?

A: Should be good. The lens is heavy, so I recommend a tripod or at least a monopod.

Q: 10. is it fast enough for sports like soccer?

A: The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens has a wide enough aperture for shooting most daylight situations, like a soccer game. If you are referring to the speed of the autofocus, it will depend mostly on the camera being used.

I was looking for a safari lens and was going to go with the 200-400/4 zoom, but was not looking forward to the expense and especially the size and weight. There didn't seem to be any alternatives. Then this lens appeared and I bought it. Haven't gone on safari yet, but think it is great so far. I think it is as sharp as my 70-200/2.8 (purely subjective) and is the same size. The autofocus is very fast. Like, too, the 72mm filter size, the same as other lenses I have. My only improvement request would be to not extend the barrel with zoom. Build quality is also very high. People complain about the price compared to the old model, but I think it is a good value.

I was eyeing professional 400mm lenses which were very expensive. I wanted one to take better shots of wildlife, especially birds. When this one came out, the price was significantly less then the ones that I could only look at! I love that I could quicly get shots that were in focus and have the help of the image stabilization. Then if the wildlife stuck around I could use the manual controls to get more exacting photographs. My only complaint is the weight, but it seems that all the lenses in this category are heavier than the camera! The shots I have taken so far had excellent color and resolution.

Used the lens for shooting shore birds in Florida. The focusing was very fast and the images were sharp.

Fast focus, great color contrast, solidly built. It's expensive but I think it's worth it.

I use this lens mainly for Nature, Birds and our spectacular sunsets. I also use it for that long reach that 400 MM gives. With my NIKON D 200, the FX format gives me a whopping 600 MM. That's something NIKON's 600 MM lens gives, but not at $10,000 but for a far far less price range. My photos are crisp, clear and sharp. Colors are vibrant, not flat. Make no mistake, like any other great and powerful lens, it is fairly heavy. I use a monopod and it works great, especially with the VR this lens offers. I have the original 80-400. It's a good lens but the new 80-400 is in a league by itself! I was hoping NIKON would go to F 2.8 but even at 4.5 it's great. NIKON went cheap by printing the manual as a fold out chart rather then as a booklet.
