Nikon continues to make long range telephoto lens smaller and better quality. Its reasonably close focusing distance and long reach give it great flexibility. The f/4.5 is sufficient for the new cameras with the high and relative noise-free ISOs. 5

I was searching for a lens to cover a soccer field from goal to goal. I tried to make due with a 70-200 with a 2x converter and was short or to close at the ends of the field. Results were almost ok but the converter really slowed down the focusing. Purchased the 80-400 and took it to a lake to try it out. Results were excellent. Amazed at the focus speed and the amount of ground this zoom can cover. This is the outdoor action lens I was looking for. The zoom is a little stiff but at this price point that is to be expected. Can't wait for soccer season to start up again. 5

I've had this lens only a few weeks now, but I am impressed with its quality. It's what you'd expect for a Nikkor G lens in this price range. I use it mainly for wildlife photography, and it excels in that role. It has sharpness throughout the focal range, and I like its size and portability. For me, it's been exactly what I had hoped for. 5
