Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. hi im planning fitting this to my a6500 can you please give zoom values with & without the converter?.thanks, Terry

A: It says 1.4x....multiply 70 by 1.4. Now multiply 200 by 1.4. These two number make the larger range. Keep in mind with the teleconverer you get a worse f stop. It becomes a F4 stop

Q: 2. Does the Optical Steady Shot also functions well when filming with e.g. the Sony Fs7? Does anyone have experience with that?

A: The Optical steady shot feature is compatible with the FS7.

Q: 3. What's the weight of this lens?

A: The Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS Len weighs in at 3.3 lb./1480g.

Q: 4. Is there any variable ND filter that fits inside the lens hood?

A: Like any other mainstream 70-200mm zoom, you can put as many filters as practical on this lense's filter threads and the hood will go over the filters and attach to the lens via its dedicated baynot mount.

Q: 5. Does it come with a case?

A: Yes and it is a nice padded case...I would say a level below a Lowepro as comparison when it comes to protecting the lens itself

Q: 6. Is this just to cover the lense like a case or can you use the lense while it has this cover? how can you move the distance and focus rings?

A: Hi, the LensCoat Lens Cover is made to be used while the cover is on the lens. When used the waterproof cover is design to protect the lens from harsh outdoor elements. The cover also features a clear plastic window over the auto focus, focus limiter controls and the distance scale to ensure that you can access all controls without having to take the case off.

Q: 7. Just got it today. Is it normal that the lens twisting just a tiny little once locked on mount. It seems to be a little loose , I guess that is what I meant to say.

A: My FE 2.8 70-200 GM OSS will wiggle back and forth very slightly when mounted on my a7RII.

Q: 8. Does this len work for a7

A: Yes it does. They are all E-mount. So it is supposed to work just fine.

Q: 9. If I used a 2x teleconverter with this how much light do I loose? I am using A6500

A: Hi Ariel, with a 2x teleconverter you will lose two stops.

Q: 10. Is this lens compatible with the Sony A 6000

A: Yes. This lens is fully compatible with the Sony Alpha a6000.

Moving over to a complete Sony system I was nervous about giving up my Canon 70-200 f2.8 lens. I should not have worried, the new Sony 70-200 f2.8 glass is easily as good as the old Canon and gives w=me amazing auto focus with the A7R2 and A9. Downsides? Well, the lens is a little heavy and so is the price. But when you're making your living with a camera you need the best.

I am in love with this lens! I actually use it more than I thought I would. I keep a 24/70 GM and the awesome 85 GM in my kit. The 85 GM stayed in my case at my last portrait shoot. That's impressive. This is in no way a replacement for the Sony 85 GM. However, if I were starting over, the 70/200 GM would have been purchased before the 85 GM. All three GM lenses I have are irreplaceable.

Very happy with this purchase. It stands up well against the Canon or Nikon competition and the added benefit of a little closer focusing range is nice. I don’t use the custom buttons on the lens and the lens hood looks weird being white. But performance of the glass is tops

I had read others comments about this lens being heavy. Yes... it is heavy, but man, does it take sharp images!

Love it, Images are clear and sharp. Nice to set the side buttons on the lens to control Eye Auto Focus. The lens hood even comes with a slide to be able to get to your polarizer filter, this is very nice.

Pros: 1. As far as I know, this lens doesn't suffer the copy-variation problems like the other two GM zooms (24-70 GM especially and 16-35 GM). At least my copy is super sharp across (except for 200mm @ F2.8, which I will explain below). Sony really needs to maintain a consistent quality management, at least on their GM line. 2. If you are a bokeh queen, you'll be very happy. Of course it won't get closer to 100 STF GM, but this is good enough. 3. Excellent build quality. Zoom ring and focus ring are really easy and comfortable to use. The lens itself doesn't feel abnormally heavy with A7RII but you do need strong arms to hold it for a whole-day shooting. 4. The colors this lens produces are REALLY REALLY pleasant to watch, which exceeds all of my expectations by a large margin. Compared to the 720L IS II from Canon, the bokeh and the out-of-camera colors from the 720GM are much more pleasing. Cons: 1. F2.8 at 200mm is kinda soft, I mean you could tell very easily even in small JPGs and it got instantly much sharper if you dial it down at F3.2 and it becomes as sharp as 70mm at F4. Personally this is a huge disappointment to me because I was planning to use the telephoto end more. 2. Yes it hunts in low light when mounted on A7RII. I mean it hunts a little even in some shady early afternoon. It doesn't matter to me much because I don't do sports. But if you do a lot of sports and you are not using A9, forgot about this lens. I also tried it on A6500 that has a better focus system, it is still not good enough to do serious sports photography. Conclusion: If you are mostly doing landscape, studio portrait or any other mostly non-active photography, go for it! Its inconsistency sometimes will make you mad but it is well worth the price tag for its non-comparable image quality and excellent build quality. For sports photographers? I will probably check the ability of A9 first before I can decide to buy this.

Recently purchased this lens via a B&H used deal. It was rated as a "10" but I was a little concerned. Super fast shipping. To my suprise, this thing looked un-used and brand new :) I got the opportunity to use the lens on my A7RIII... all I can say is "wow" i'm very impressed. i'm a part time photographer. I do mostly event photography on the side, this lens is going to take my work to the next level. Great quality pictures... super sharp... fast focus, lovely bokeh. it's heavy... and very expensive. But worth it. When people ask me "Why did you spend so much on a lens?" I reply... "INVEST IN YOURSELF"
