Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Could you theoretically attach treads and a Tilta Nucleus-M to this to manually control zoom and focus for video?

A: Yes, this is possible. Gearing can be attached to the Zoom and Focus Rings to enable control via a Follow Focus system.

Q: 2. Its this lenses made in Japan

A: It is not manufactured in Japan.

Q: 3. Is this stable when using it handheld? For example is it good for indoor basketball?

A: it is stable as long as your are using 1/125 speed or higher.

Q: 4. Does it come with a case?

A: Yes and it is a nice padded case...I would say a level below a Lowepro as comparison when it comes to protecting the lens itself

Q: 5. does this lens feature internal focusing and internal zooming? Does it extend during zooming or does it remain the same length?

A: Internal focus and zoom. Little to no focus breathing either.

Q: 6. With the multiplier on the A6500 what does the mm become roughly? I am trying to avoid a teleconverter if possible to retain the 2.8. Thanks!

A: The Sony crop sensors are a 1.5 multiplier. The 70-200 f/2.8 would have the equivalent of 105-300 on the a6300/a6500.

Q: 7. Will this lens work with the A6000?

A: As the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS Lens is designed for use on the Sony E-mount, which is the lens mount used on the Sony Alpha a6000 Mirrorless Digital Camera, yes, the lens would be compatible for use on the a6000 Digital Camera.

Q: 8. what is the main difference from the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II Lens that costs a lot more?

A: The FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II has improved optics (significant difference in my personal opinion after I traded my original one from the II), it's 30% lighter, and has a better linear AF motor for improved speed and accuracy.

Q: 9. Does this len work for a7

A: Yes it does. They are all E-mount. So it is supposed to work just fine.

Q: 10. If I used a 2x teleconverter with this how much light do I loose? I am using A6500

A: Hi Ariel, with a 2x teleconverter you will lose two stops.

I paired this with my new A7RIII to shoot sports - the lens is a bit front heavy on this body so I needed to get the additional grip on the camera body to provide some stabilization when gripping this combo.

The lens itself is well made and sturdy - build is as good as my older Nikon 70-200 2.8. Optically the quality is superb and I have been very happy with the results I have got from the lens.

I like the little slider slot on the lens hood - great for adjusting something like a variable ND filter (if one is attached) while having the hood on. The hood also provides a nice clickable lock locking the hood into place when attached to the lens.

It comes with a lens case which is great for storing the lens when not in use.

All in all, I am very happy with this purchase.

The quality both build and image are fantastic! It is heavy but that comes with turf. I highly recommend you get what you pay for.

The Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 GM lens is an amazing piece of glass. I contemplated this decision for months. What's the best lens to get when I need a longer reach? There are a lot of photographers that believe it's easier to just get closer, but there are always reasons why you can't. I'm not a wildlife shooter, but I am a father. I wanted something to get great photos of kids sports, concerts/events, and times where compression just works better.

Then I debated whether I needed an f/2.8 or would work with a f/4. The f/4 had great reviews, but taking photos of sports (like swimming) or events indoors drove me to the f/2.8. The pictures are great and super sharp, but I really enjoy being able to crank up the shutter speed and still get enough light.

The teleconverter pairing in this set is a great deal. If you think you may ever need to get a little more reach without cropping and losing resolution this is an amazing pairing. There is absolutely no loss of AF speed that I notice. You do lose a stop of light with a 1.4x converter, but it's still great to get that added reach. Is it better than throwing on an APS-C camera (1.5x crop)? Yes, I get the full frame benefits of my camera's resolution and it's crazy sharp.

I tried the 2.0x teleconverter and it's not the same experience. You don't get sharp photos. I think if you need the reach, you're better off going to the 1.4x and throwing that on an APS-C body. I think you'll consistently get better photos that are still very sharp. The 2.0x loses 2 stops of light and not sharp at all.

So if you're going to purchase the 70-200mm f/2.8 and thinking you'd like a little more reach at times, this is the best pairing and you get a discount on this set at B&H! How can you go wrong?

Thank you B&H for always being an amazing resource for us photographers!

The Sony FE 70-200 2.8 GM was well worth the wait. The only negative is it's a bit heavy however yielding fabulous results and fast becoming one of my favorites. I'd recommend monopod or tripod vs handheld for extended shooting. IMO the Sony FE 70-200 2.8 GM OSS will be the benchmark other zooms will be compared to.

Eye AF used.

I this closeup was taken from the portrait.

Take this from an amateur hobbyist: I've been shooting birds in my yard testing the lens for a week. have gotten some really sharp images at 200 from 40 feet. When cropped on the bird, some super sharp images of their feathers. Adding the new Sony 1.4 teleconverter, same result at maximum zoom. That converter adds hardly any weight or length, by the way.

I gladly swapped out my Canon gear for the new A9 body by Sony but glass made me nervous. I was used to tack-sharp performance from my 70-210 and wasn't sure if the offering from Sony would compare. It does and is a joy to use. Sharp as a pin, lighter and overall a hair smaller than its Canon counterpart, this lens zooms a bit smoother, and retains its corner to corner sharpness. I love the programmable button that lets me activate focus lock or Eye Autofocus depending on my shooting requirements. And the auto focus is instantaneous regardless of what mode you are in. This is my new go-to lens.

It actually took month and a day, from my pre-order with B&H to receiving the lens. With the few dollars I had left, I set up a little informal lens test, (taped dollar bills and stamps on a card) to see just how the lens would perform it terms of sharpness, color, bokeh. And when panning on and off the card, how fast could the lens refocus back to the card? (fast enough for me.) Used different f stops and distances during the test,- camera set to aperture priority. In every case I am delighted to report the lens performed stunningly. Have also hiked around the woods grabbing shots, and again I am very pleased with the results. I know its not inexpensive lens but I am not regretting this purchase.
