Tiffen Series 9 Soft/fx 3 Filter

The Tiffen Series 9 Soft/FX 3 Filter diffuses strong light entering the lens and produces a glowing effect. While the resulting image appears softer and ethereal, there is little loss of clarity or detail. This filter works by diffusing the light entering the lens with small aberrations; by spreading the light more evenly, a soft glow is created rather than the sharp, well-defined image when shooting without a filter. This filter has a 3 density, providing a moderate amount of softening.
Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings. This filter is compatible with Series 9 filter holders.

Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. What is the difference between the Cokin P121 and the P121S graduated neutral density filters? Both are stated to be 3-stop graduated filters. Does the s version make a more gradual transition from clear to dark than the base 121? Why would you use one versus the other?
A: I believe the S refers to soft indicating a softer transition from the neutral density region to clear. I use the S version when the scene I am trying to capture has objects (such as trees) extending into the brighter region (e.g. sky). I find the S version often works nicely when shooting some waterfalls and I want to have the foreground more exposed without introducing a hard transition line. If I'm shooting a sunset or sunrise with a strong horizon line I typically go with a harder transitioned filter.
Q: 2. Can I use a 4 x 4 filter with this?
A: The Tiffen Pro 100 is designed to accomodate 100mm Tiffen filters (4mm thick), which are 4x4 or 4x5.65.
Q: 3. Does the filter holder rotate like the Lee system?
A: Yes, the Cokin Z-Pro holder rotates.
Q: 4. What cameras will this filter work on?
A: This filter works on film and digital cameras, and the 49mm size for this particular offering allows it to be mounted on any camera with a lens whose filter thread size is 49mm.
Q: 5. What is the difference between the digital diffusion and a classic soft?
A: Please visit our website at a href= http://tiffen.com/diffusion/ target= _blank http://tiffen.com/diffusion//a for full product descriptions and video examples of all the diffusion filters we manufacture.
Q: 6. I'm ready to sell this filter because on my camcorder......Panasonic AG-AC90 it makes everything kind of reddish...Like the trees....and even the sky is kind of weird.Any advice?I'm doing something wrong or what? Thanks
A: The Tiffen XLE Advantix filter is designed for shooting extreme long exposures with still cameras to capture motion (waterfalls, streams, clouds, etc). This filter is not designed for video cameras. Here is the Tiffen product description:The Tiffen XLE Series ADVANTIX filter is designed to be used on DSLR cameras in B&W or Color mode, plus APS-C sensors in these modes when used in combination with lenses approved for IR photography. Designed to take extreme long exposure photographs in manual set up, the ADVANTIX filter will allow you to blur any movement in your image. The intensity of this effect is achieved through adjustments in manual mode of aperture, shutter and ISO settings. Designed to remove the near IR polluting light waves, the ADVANTIX removes these polluting light waves by introducing an active absorbing element. This element adds a slight greenish color cast to the filter, which can be adjusted for, either in your cameras white balance settings or in your post software afterwards. If shooting stills, the reddish cast in your image can be fixed by adjusting the still cameras white balance or in post with Lightroom. Q: 9. Will the 55mm clear standard coated filter by Tiffen fit an AF-S NIKKOR 18-55mm lens?
