Tiffen 77mm Soft/fx 5 Filter

Tiffen 77mm Soft/fx 5 Filter
  • Product Code: ga1145
  • Availability: In Stock

$323.97 $417.92

The Tiffen 77mm Soft/FX 5 Filter can be applied to purposely reduce the appearance of blemishes and wrinkles in portraits or to apply a general soft-focus effect while maintaining overall sharpness. An array of small lenses distributed within the surface of this filter smooths fine lines and textures, which can be useful for creating a more flattering result of a subject.

This filter has a grade of 5. Grades of 1/2, 1, 2, 3, and 4 are also available where this filter type's effect becomes approximately twice as strong with each grade number increase. When higher grade numbers are applied, a halation effect around highlights can be created to further enhance a subject's appearance or produce a desired effect.

This filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity. It is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between two pieces of optical glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. It is really worth to have this filter when using a lot of nd filtering? Like to use nd1.2 and nd9 combined when shooting for ex 4K with a A7S? Do you really noticemthat difference?

A: It depends on your camera... is your cameras sensor known to have IR issues? Are you doing long exposures where IR pollution can be a problem? If the answer is yes, then this filter will help to eliminate the IR pollution.

Q: 2. Can I mount this on top of a circular polarizing filter? Is there a downside to doing that?

A: The Tiffen VND filter consists of two circular polarizing filters...two CP filters together create the VND effect. Mounting this on top of a circular polarizing filter may cause some undersired effects such as cross polarization, vignetting in addition to difficulty adjusting the two filters as both turn and are adjusted by hand... if you mount the CP, then the VND it would be difficult to control both as they are turning. We recommend using a straight ND and then a CP instead.

Q: 3. Is there a way to make them fit in the Rokinon lenses? I heard Rokinon lenses doesn't have a way to add filters.

A: All Tiffen screw in filters require filter threads. We make the VND filter in 52, 58, 62, 67, 72, 77 and 82 mm sizes. We recommend you contact Rokinon for specifications regarding their lenses

Q: 4. Can I use this to photograph a partial solar eclipse?

A: Read this B&H article about the eclipse. VND filter won't be dark enough. Article says you need solar filter or #14 welders glass.https://a href= http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/solar-observing/ci/33818/N/3583558376/sba?utm_source=appboy&utm_medium=push&utm_campaign=Eclipse%2020170802&utm_content=B target= _blank www.bhphotovideo.com/c/solar-observing/ci/33818/N/3583558376/sba?utm_source=appboy&utm_medium=push&utm_campaign=Eclipse%2020170802&utm_content=B/a

Q: 5. Will this fit the x100v?

Q: 6. Whats the outer diameter for the 82mm VND?

A: Tiffen 82mm Variable Neutral Density Filter has a 98mm outer diameter.

Q: 7. Hello, I did read a review telling that when using a IR/UV Cut filter on Wide Angle Lenses the image can be compromised: the interference varies with the angle of incidence of the light on the glass. This renders this filter unusable with wide-angle and even normal focal lenses, resulting in a greenish gradient from the center to the corners. - this was posted for the 72mm version of an IR/UV Cut filter of another brand.- Q: Did someone else has this problem on Full Frame & APS-C DSLRs with Wide Angle Lenses like 16mm with THIS Tiffen W77IR filter?Thank you very much!

A: Hi HD Cam T,I purchased this filter to correct a known IR contamination defect in the Sony EX-1 camcorder. Black suits turn different shades of brown depending on their material without the filter. An orchestra of black suits will look like everyone is wearing a different shade of off black tuxes. But some will be true black. I only use the filter when I need it. I manually white balance the camera when using the IR filter. The image has a green cast if you do not white balance. You also loose about a half an f stop with the filter. Not a perfect fix for my camera but it is the only one I have found.

Q: 8. Will this fit the Canon EF 50mm lens?

A: There are three different Canon lenses which match your description, each one takes a different size filter. Please visit the URL below and then click on the lens you have. Once on that page scroll down and click on SPECS. The filter thread size will be listed here.

Q: 9. How many stops is this filter?

A: The filter factor for this filter is 8x, which translates to 3 stops.

Q: 10. Hi I use 5D markiii ,I bought this ND, it only can shoot nature , it shoot people pics too?thanks

A: The TIffen VND filter provides you with 2 to 8 stops of light control. You can use this to limit the light entering your lens/camera in order to do long exposures during the day, or you can use it to limit light entering your camera during the bright sun in order to shoot low apertures for a shallow depth of field.
