This is a terrific lens for general photography. But unless you plan on doing a lot a low-light work (concerts and indoor sports) the f4-7.1 version is much lighter, cheaper, and just a good optically.

I saw people raving over this lens on YouTube. The fact that it was L glass with an f4 but performed way better than expected. So I took a chance and bought it. No regrets.... It has become my own workhorse. Pretty much made my 50 worthless. I just got back from a 4 week Italy trip. I used it for food, landscape, stars, coastline and sunrise and sunsets. I never once questioned if I needed a better lens. When photographing the ancient ruins in Rome and Pompeii it was perfect. I could pick just the right zoom and depth in the photo. Really don't pass this up for the price.

I wanted a moderate zoom lens that was very sharp and also lightweight. This RF is a winner. Very fast and accurate focus on my EOS R5. There are no discernable optical defects (I still apply automatic optical corrections in post processing to my RAW files even though the corrections are minimal.).

This replaces the EF 24-105L that has served me well for more than 10 years. It performs very well as an all purpose walk around lens and group table photos at events with/without flash and is easier to carry and use since I no longer need the RF-EF converter.

At a point in my equipment refresh, I was about to upgrade my EF 24-105L Mk1 to Mk2, ditto 100-400L while going from 5D Mk3 to Mk4. The R system announcement made me pause, and I have acquired this lens and an RP body with EF converter to gauge the potential both for mirrorless and for the new mount. This new lens is quite amazing, while i have not yet put it to extensive use it is certainly well build and paired with the RP provides a less obtrusive walk-around system than a 5D and EF equivalent. Small detail: I mourn the loss of the focus distance window but I guess Ill get used to it. I have yet to do anything with the extra ring, but when I get around to programming it it will probably grow on me. The body of the lens is smoother than EF, no protrusions for control buttons for AF, IS, etc.. and the addition of a lock button is nice even if I have never had issues of gravity creep with my EF Mk1. I know that it will take a while to get all my lenses collection in RF, but the adapter is quite easy to use so the more recent EF lenses can still be used for a while.
