Califone's 1886PLC Spirit SD Multimedia Player/Cassette Recorder and Stereo Learning Center is teacher-tested to support reading activities, language learning, ESL, foreign language instruction, and ELL/ELD programs associated with the English Language Arts portion of the Common Core State Standards. You'll appreciate the flexibility in a learning center that's equally versatile for music and movement classes or read-alongs in independent study. The 2 watts of the Spirit SD are powerful enough for up to 40 people to hear content in a typical room for whole class learning.

Adaptable to different situations, the Spirit SD multimedia player/recorder supports many different formats - AM/FM radio, cassette and a top-loading CD player. It also features USB and SD ports so student or teacher-generated content can be played back for the entire class to hear. The built-in microphone on the Spirit SD records student responses for later playback and helps monitor student progress with lessons and reading practice. It's made with rugged ABS plastic to withstand the rigors of daily school use and has recessed speakers to prevent accidental damage in busy classrooms.

An included 10-person stereo jackbox can be connected to the 3.5mm headphone plug to use the Spirit SD as a learning center for a small group of differentiated learners to listen through connected headphones without disrupting the rest of the class. Four pairs of switchable stereo/mono headphones with snap-on 1/4" adapters and a carrying case for the system are also included.

Q: 1. Does the jog wheel on this unit actually jog through tracks being played back (CD and Bluetooth) or is it only for advancing to the next track?

A: It is only for advancing to the next track or the previous track.

A: No, this would not play DVDs.

Q: 3. This looks like same cd transport and balanced outputs as their CD-500B but way lower cost. Is it same transport??

A: The transport section on the Tascam CD-400u doffers from the the CD-500b. The CD-400u has a jog wheel to skip through songs, where as the CD-500-b has buttons. The CD-500b also has options in the transport section not available on the CD-400u like "search", "intro check" and "play mode" just to name a few.

Q: 4. Would this unit be a good choice for digitizing older family audio cassettes as far as quality of the output (Line out or USB)?

A: I don't think this machine will digitize anything....unfortunately the one I got was defective and did not operate well...but I think it's probably a good machine for elementary recording...

Not the highest tech audio component, but the CD-400U is what I was looking for to fill a void in my audio system setup. All I wanted was a single CD player that would also play-back pre-recorded tracks from SD cards and USB drives. This unit can also copy CDs to the SD/USB media, but is limited to MP3 format in copy mode. Playback in WAV and other higher resolution formats is available. The unit also has AM/FM radio tuners, but I'm not likely to use them. The owner's manual is available on the Teac/Tascam website, and provides full details on its capabilities 5

This is great CD player, very quiet too as I have it on my night stand..great AM/FM tuner...& I can record all night long directly to a high capacity USB drive...no computer needed! Listen mostly with headphones. Highly recommend. 5

I've been looking for a multiple function unit like this for quite awhile. My CD and Cassette deck players fell into a need for repair and I decided to just replace them with this unit as the budget finally allowed me to do so. This unit is awesome and we are enjoying it immensely! Highly recommend. 5

This is the unit I was looking for in a while, In still keep in good conditions many cassette's that I recorded many years ago. My old Pioneer player could not get repaired and many listed as used and in good condition in many websites were of no satisfaction. I decided to look for one that could transfer from one format to another. The sound is excellent and the unit looks amazing, If I were a Tascam Co. exec, I would design a unit that can have auto reverse / play on both sides. Just for the ones like me that value formats that are past of audio history. Thanks B & H for shipping this unit fast . 5

All the sources sound outstanding, better than previous non-pro gear Ive had. Great CD, Bluetooth, SD card and USB playback. Easy to pair. Really well made, looks great in the audio system. 5
