A: Charlie, it depends on your budget and whether or not you want/need a zoom vs a prime. This lens is a pretty fast prime (1.4), so it does pretty well in low light, but it isn't a zoom, so your feet will be your zoom. If you gave a bit more money in your budget, a good used 70-200 L or 24-105 L might be a strong starting point for you. However, if you need to stay sub 400.00, this 50, an 85mm or an EFS 18-135 are decent performers. As you progress with indoor sports photography, you might find yourself moving up to a full frame camera and faster (2.8, etc.) L glass. Good luck, and like they say, the most important gear is behind the viewfinder.

Q: 8. I'd like to buy this lens and need to know if this works with a 5D Mark II? My husband has an older 50/1.8 EF II and it doesn't work with my camera. It fits but it won't allow me to take a photo. I'm not sure why, but I'm wondering if this lens will work with my camera. Please advise. Thanks.

I recently purchased this lens for my Canon 5D Mark IV. I am extremely happy with the quality of this lens. When I was considering purchasing a prime lens, I went back and forth between this lens and that Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM. Although I do no have the f/1.2L USM lens to compare this one to, I really think that this is a great lens that produces quality images and it can save you money! 5

I really enjoy this lens! It’s a little soft, but has great character. Auto focus on my eos r is solid and I nail focus 95/100 times. It’s a great focal length and like this version more than canon’s f1.8 model. 5

There's a reason why this lens is so beloved among canon users, it might be one of the best lenses Canon offers, it is almost painfully sharp and clear, fast (both in aperture and AF) and colors are spot on and even though it is not an L Canon lens the build quality on this little guy is great. If you're considering this 50mm lens you will not be disappointed. 5
