However, the lens won me over on my Sony A7RII. I read some of the reviews about sharpness and was concerned I would be disappointed - NOT AT ALL. It's sharp as a tack. Also, between the Eye-AF and the noticeably closer minimum focusing distance, it's a winner.

I wrote a review (George) where I said that the resolution of this lens was outstanding, even wide open. There is some softening off center at f2.8 and f3.5, especially at 200mm. I also indicated in my first review that the lens did not focus fast. I will amend that: the lens focuses fast in good or moderately good light. OSS is extremely good-- about 80% of photos at 200 mm taken with shutter around 1/20 sec are quite sharp and some are sharp at 1/10second. I have tested this lens (again on a Sony A7R M2) with its dedicated Sony 2.0 TC and the results are great at focal lengths to beyond 300mm. The combination performs pretty well at 400mm but for sharpest results I would keep it or below 175 mm x2 = 350 mm. These tests were performed on a 11x17 inch target with the camera on a good tripod and using remote shutter. Below or around 300 mm above f4 the results are tack sharp pretty much across the frame. The combination does not lose too much at f3.5 except at the higher focal lengths. Use of the TC at long focal lengths does lower contrast significantly but the matched TC certainly can produce super photographs.

Have only owned this lens a short time however I'm very impressed with it. The compression when used for portraits is fantastic. Exceeds my Nikon 70-200 2.8

The day this lens arrived I took it to my grand daughter's music event. The images I brought back of her and her classmates exceeded all expectations -- and my expectations were high. The challenging lighting was mixed 3 ways -- fluorescent, outdoor via windows, and incandescent. The AWB handled that well, autofocus did well and when I checked with manual focus I did not gain much more. Most of the shots were wide open at f2.8 and yielded a nice bokeh. I was also using the 1.4 teleconverter which worked better than expected with surprisingly little difference in lens focus speed and resolution performance with or without it. The zoom and focus controls were very smooth with just the right amount of resistance; the toggle controls equally solid. The whole lens has the feel of a very high quality unit which it is. I am looking forward to many years of pleasant use just as I have experienced with predecessors of this stellar lens. This is definitely a keeper lens.

There's enough reviews of this already but, needless to say I'm not purchasing primes any more!

I have an A7RII and this lens is a wonderful addition to the system. Autofocus is snappy and the zoom ring is smooth. The only downsides of the lens are that it's rather large/heavy and expensive. Still I'm glad I bought it and it allows me to get good photos in less than ideal situations that I couldn't have before. I've already gotten many great photos with it of my children and their teams playing outdoor sports. While I've mostly used it outdoors thus far, I look forward to using it in gymnasiums over the winter months.

I have never owned a 70-200 lens, & had a bit of a void in my lens distances. I'm glad I waited for this to come. I'm still getting to know it's nuances, but very happy so far.
