Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How this lens compare to the 85 1.8 ?. Difficult to compare between f/1.4 and F/1.8, any direct experience ?

A: Before getting into quality differences between the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED Lens and the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Lens, a very significant different is the focal length. The perspective from a 105mm lens is different than that from a 85mm lens. This is very much dependent on personal preference and specific application. Aside from this, there are a few benefits to the 105mm. A Nano Crystal Coat has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting. Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates, though double check that your camera is compatible with lenses that have this. The 105mm has a better build quality overall. The f1.4 aperture with the longer focal length will provide a shallower depth of field than is possible on the 85mm lens. Overall the 105mm f/1.4E is optically better than the 85mm f/1.8G lens.

Q: 2. I have read the specs on this and it is not clear what cameras are not compatible with the electromagnetic component. Is a D780 compatible to this lens?

A: Yes, the Nikon D780 is compatible with the E-type lenses.

Q: 3. Can you recommend a lens case (such as Lowepro) for this lens?

A: The Lowepro Lens Case 11 x 14cm (Black), BH #LOLC1114, is a great option for the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED Lens.

Q: 4. How does this lens compare to the Nikon AF DC-Nikkor 105 mm F/2D Lens?

A: At the same apertures, it performs just very slightly better than the DC, but almost the same. If images are produced by skilled shooters, you'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference in a blind test at the same apertures. Of course the new lens goes to f/1.4 where the depth of field effect is dramatic, which is the main selling point. The new lens has slightly more distortion but less flare and CA owing to better coatings. The new lens does not have a DC control ring to manipulate bokeh. The new lens does not have an aperture ring, unlike the DC-Nikkor, so it is practically worthless for classic Nikon SLRs. The new lens is light and plasticky feeling, unlike the older solid metal and glass crinkle-coated DC-Nikkor. The new lens has a AF-S in-lens motor, which will burn out after some years and will render it a manual focus lens when Nikon decides to stop making replacement motors, as they have already done for other top-of-the-line AF-S lenses...whereas the 105/2DC with screwdriver AF will still be working just fine a hundred years from now.

Q: 5. Is this lens weather-sealed?

A: Yes, it is, it has the rubber gasket around the mount. It is a great lens, extremely sharp and very versatile.

Q: 6. The specs for the Nikon 24 mm f/1.8G lens say the filter thread is 72 mm x 0.75 mm pitch. Most filter designations don't add a pitch. What does this mean? Will it take a normal 72 mm filter/step-up ring/step-down ring or is something additional required?

A: As far as I know, the filter is standard and have had no problems with any off the shelf filters. I also use the hood, with the filter, that came with the lens. I find the lens to be very sharp. It is slightly heavy but that is to be expected. As expected, I keep a UV filter on at all times, usually made by Hoya. I display my photos on a Sony 65 Inch Ultra High 4K TV screen. I use the 24mm Nikkor on the Nikon 5500 so it acts as if it were a 36mm on a full frame. Hope this helps.

Q: 7. Have a D700 FX Nikon is this compatible?mm

A: Fits my D750

Q: 8. Does the replace the Nikon 135mm?

A: The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED Lens is a similar focal length to the Nikon 135mm lens; it doesn't replace it, it's just a different focal length.

Q: 9. Will this lens work on a D7000? I kept this camera and assume the lens is compatible resulting in a 36mm equivalent. Thanks.

A: Yes it will work very well, it is a Sharp fast wide lense no distortion to speak of.

Q: 10. would this lens or theNikon AF NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8D Lens be better for landscape timelapses? What is the difference? Or is there another lens that would be better suited for the task? Thank you! DM

A: I would recommend the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 20mm f/1.8G ED Lens for todays cameras and time lapse use since it is fully electronic. The Nikon AF NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8D Lens is better for manual focus and aperture use situations.

I've been shooting with this lens on a D300 since Christmas, when I received it as a gift. Sharpness is dangerous! That's a good thing! After all it IS a prime lens, optimized for the aps-c sensor... A tripod is always recommended; turn the VR off if you use one. It just makes for a better image. In all, for the $$, does exactly what it's supposed to.

Have not had much opportunity to use this lens but the few instances have produced bright and generally sharp images. I know some users have complained about the build and potential lack of durability but I am not hard on my equipment and am very grateful for the reduced weight. Makes me want to use it more often. Focus seems reasonably fast and accurate, but again, I have not had too much opportunity to use.

I have been using the 105mm f.28 FX lens for years for dental photography. It's an excellent lens, but the latest VR version is HEAVY. I decided to give the 85mm DX version a try, and I'm delighted. It's significantly lighter which makes holding the camera one-handed (while using the other hand for the reflective mirror) much easier. I don't notice any drop-off in sharpness or contrast. I couldn't be happier with this lens.

Love the internal focus! Makes focusing close up much easier. That said, if you do copy work (which I don't), you probably will need an apparatus to align and hold your camera in place. It's a great lens for portraiture, too.

Nice lens, light, smooth, fast focusing, clear & sharp. Works great with R1C1 and Sigma EM 140. Has internal focus.

Had to take the misses to a floral show and the ease of use of my new lens makes my pics look spectacular. Even my hand held pics were clear as can be. No blur whatsoever.

So, we bought this lens to finally get a DX macro to replace my old analog Nikon macro lens - and we are not disappointed. Although we might have preferred a macro zoom (the old one was), this one is an incredibly versatile lens. The 85mm format is of course great for portraits and that mid-range distance, while the micro ability to do extreme close-ups is of course what we bought it for and what it does extremely well. The lens also has a great balance, not too heavy nor too soft, and I haven't taken it off the camera (a D200) now since we bought it.

I have been using this lens for amateur macrophotography - mostly watches and watch movements. I have been delighted by the performance of the lens. Crisp and rich images, no distortion, just a delight. Manual focus on macro is a must - autofocus does a lot of hunting - but this is very easy do to (using with D80 body). I've taken images at f45 with shutter speeds of 15 seconds with a tripod (and without the VR) and the results are great. Autofocus at nonmacro works quickly and this is a good walking around lens, too. It has a solid feel to it, like it is really going to last.
