Inspired by the famous Noct NIKKOR, the AF-S NIKKOR 58mm f/1.4G from Nikon is a unique prime that pairs the distinct slightly long focal length with a fast maximum aperture. The bright f/1.4 design enables working in difficult lighting conditions and also permits working with shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques. In regard to the optics, a pair of aspherical elements are used to reduce distortion, spherical aberrations, and comatic aberrations to realize sharp, clear image quality throughout the aperture range. Both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have also been applied to control flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color rendering. Additionally, a Silent Wave Motor provides fast, accurate, and quiet autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override.

Slightly longer-than-normal prime is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however is also compatible with DX models where it provides an 87mm equivalent focal length.

Impressively fast f/1.4 maximum aperture excels in low-light conditions and also enables greater control over depth of field for isolating subjects and working with selective focus techniques.

Two aspherical elements are used to greatly reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to achieve high sharpness, clarity, and accurate rendering. Additionally, the optical design has also been optimized for shooting at wider apertures, including f/1.4, and minimizes comatic aberrations and ensures even sharpness across the frame.

Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.

Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this lens work on Nikon D5600?

A: yes but focus only in manual

Q: 2. Will this lens work on a Nikon D3200?

A: It will, but it will be manual focus as the D3200 does not have a focus motor in the body of the camera, and this lens does not have a built in focus motor. Nikon makes this same lens with the built in focus motor (look for one that says AF-S instead of AF), but it will be slightly more expensive.

Q: 3. I have a d7000. Just purchased an import normal AF-50mm f/1.8D autofocus lens.. D7000 was not listed by you as an incomparable camera but will not autofocus and f-stop does not work.. When the lens is mounted, something like a error message flashes ending in EE. What is going on.

A: The D7000 is compatible with any autofocus lenses made by Nikon or for the Nikon AF system by other manufacturers. The lens you purchased is a Nikon D type lens which has an external aperture ring where the lens mounts to the camera. When using D type lenses on a modern Nikon DSLR such as your D7000, you must set the aperture to f22 (orange smallest aperture) and leave it set there. You would adjust the aperture then via the command dial on the camera.

Q: 4. Does this lens work for the Nikon D750?

A: D750 does have an AF drive motor, so this lens' AF feature will work.

Q: 5. I read somewhere that this lens was made for a crop sensor; my question is....are there any reviews of this lens on a crop sensor? I have the Nikon D7000 and am trying to find a sharp lens with great bokeh for portraits, and similar to the 85mm on a full frame. Any suggestions and comments would be greatly appreciated.

A: This lens is an FX type lens, which means it is originally designed to be used on both Full-frame and crop-sensor cameras. I do not have any links to cite for you showing examples of it used on the D7000, but it is a very sharp lens with great shallow depth of field for your portrait work. It is one I would definitely recommend for your D7000 if you want something in the 85mm range. This lens is based on an original design of an early Nikon 58mm lens, and they improved upon it for use on DSLRs of both formats.

Q: 6. I read about fine tuning this lens by one reviewer, but how is that done?

A: Nikon indicates that if you find particular lenses are not producing the results you desire when autofocusing, you may fine tune the autofocus performance for each lens using the AF Fine-Tune option in the camera's setup menu. It is not normally required and may interfere with normal focusing, so they state to only use when necessary. As not all Nikon DSLR cameras have this option, it is recommended to check your camera's menu to see if the option is available for your particular camera model, or check your camera's instruction manual for more information on the AF-Fine Tuning procedure.

Q: 7. Will this work with d3500?

A: No this will not function properly with a Nikon D3500.

Q: 8. Does this Nikon lens have a US warranty?

A: Yes

Q: 9. Can it be shipped in other countries? Like Romania

A: Nikon does not allow us to ship their lenses with a USA designation outside the USA. We are only allowed to ship their lenses with an Imported designation outside the USA.

Q: 10. Is this lens compatible with the Nikon FE? Thank you.

A: Yes, the Nikon Normal AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D Autofocus Lens is compatible on the Nikon FE.Note, the FE Camera has a uniquely wide range of compatibility because it has a flip-down aperture coupling pin for use with both AI and non-AI lenses.

If you don't own this one along with others you'll wonder why not get the Sigma 50 1.4 ART which is much sharper at almost have the price. I've done sharpness but this 58 will give you sharpness and also reward you with amazing character, rendering, subject isolation, colour and bokeh.

I have been on the fence for the Nikon 58mm f/1.4G lens for a while, but my only regret is that I didn't get it sooner. After some very minor AF tuning on my D750, it is by far my favorite lens. It is relatively lightweight, plenty sharp wide open and razor sharp stopped down a bit, and OMG the rendering is truly special.

I have nothing bad to say about this lens. Its a great lens, Feels like a pro quality lenses such as family of 85mm, 35mm & 24mm 1.4G lenses, I have been shooting with my D800 & D4 and getting amazing results. Great in low light. Great for wedding photographers in low light condition.

When Nikon announce this lens, I knew it was just what I'd been waiting for. I never purchased the 50mm 1.4G because it has that low life 7-blade aperture, and because Nikon doesn't recommend it for the D800. I understood Nikon to be offering this lens as an image equal to the 85mm 1.4G but with greater coverage. This lens has more beautiful bokeh and color that the 85mm. Now, I question if I will ever need the 85mm again. I see myself using the 24mm 1.4G and this 58mm overwhelmingly. Other reviews are comparing this lens to the Zeiss Otus and submitting the Otus as the sharper. I don't know why those individuals do that because anybody who can afford either lens can afford to own both. I intend to own the Otus too. I owned 5 Zeiss lenses, and I like the image beauty of Nikon lenses better. The Zeiss lenses I own are the 21 & 28mm Biogons, 45mm Planar and 90mm Sonnar for the Contax G2 film camera. I also own the Zeiss 75mm Biogon for 4x5 format. I also own lenses by Schneider, Fujinon and Rodenstock whom are well respected for yielding beautiful color. I own the Cooke Portrait PS945. This 58mm has the indoor imaging of a Zeiss sonnar, coverage near to a 50mm, and its night vision exceeds the Nikon 85mm 1.4G. I am attaching sample photos the show this 58mm compared to the 85mm 1.4G. Always the 2nd image is the 85mm. The images were taken with the D800 set on Basic quality. Question anyone who advises against buying this 58mm lens. Make sure that person isn't simply jealous because he/she can't afford the Nikon 58mm 1.4G. Other Nikon lenses I own are 24mm 1.4G, 24mm 3.5 PC, 40mm 2.8G Micro, 50mm 1.4D, 20mm 2.8D, 105mm 2.8G Micro, 85mm 1.4G and 200mm f2.0G. I use the 20mm and the 24mm PC with the Lee Filters Big Stopper. I plan to experiment with using this 58mm with The Big Stopper even though the 58mm's aperture is limited to f16.

Sharpness freaks need not apply, this one ain't for you. Unbelievable rendering at 1.4 and 2.0, and if you're stopping down further than that, it simply preforms as you would expect from a pro lens, sharp with good contrast. What this lens is for: Subject isolation, soft portraits, shooting interesting details. It's a dream lens at a wedding, or portrait session. What it's not for: sterile, tack sharp imaging. This is essentially a portrait optic. It's very sharp, but not harshly sharp. There probably isn't a huge benefit to using this on a D810 over a 16 or 25mp sensor. You won't see much more detail. I use it on my Df, and it's sharp down the pixel level, assuming I nailed focus. Given that it's a 58mm you can focus close on a person's face and not see the distortion you get with a 50mm, a subtle difference, but great for my line of work. You get the advantages of a longer lens with the ability to stand closer to your subject. It is very demanding on an AF system. You may to have calibrate it with your AF adjustment tool. I personally did not need to, but many people have. The Df and it's mediocre 39pt system has been able to keep up with it, and I imagine a finer system like the 51pt version would be even better. You'll miss a lot at first though. When I'm working fast or from a distance I often use F2.0 just so I know I get it. This is a specialty lens for specialty images. If you hear Leica people talk about the Noctilux, well this is Nikon's Noctilux! (The extra 8mm gives it a very similar DoF to an F1.0 50mm lens) This lens makes my digital and 35mm images look a lot more like the beautiful dimensional images I get from medium format. I think the negative reviews of this lens comes from people with the wrong expectations. It's about image rendering, not absolute sharpness.

I sold my 85 1.4 for this lens thats how bad I wanted it. Indeed its a special kind of lens . Wide open 1.4 is a little soft but the shot you get with it you cant achieve with any other lens . Believe me you i coupled it with my nikon df . Its a great couple . I have now a camera to remember . The lens is light weight and is my go to lens for portrait .perfect . For street just right . For landscape not bad . The perfect lens in my opinion . As I said special

Nikon's 58mm f/1.4G is a lens ahead of its time and is so misunderstood since the trend in photography seems to be leaning towards ultra sharp, boring, and clinically sterile. If you're old enough to remember using Nikon's 58 f/1.2 Noct Nikkor you will fall in love with this lens, it is that good. This lens is better than the Noct and even has autofocus. The bokeh and the way you subject transitions into a dreamy field of blur is simply amazing and pops out at you as if you were looking at a 3D image. Did I say bokeh? Points of light are turned into a kaleidoscope of color fading into blur. You just don't get that old school look with these modern lenses. After owning this lens since it first came out, I have to say I don't use my 200/2 much anymore as I can get in close to my subjects and get images that have the feel of the 200/2. I have all of Nikon's f/1.4 lenses and this is my favorite. This lens shines best for shooting portraiture, even tight close in. Don't think it is a one trick pony, it works well for other types of photography. This is a wedding photographer's dream lens for that extra special feel the 85/1.4G doesn't give.Sharpness wide open is right on par with one would expect, but not crazy sharp that you can see every pore in your model's face. Autofocus is accurate and consistent shooting wide open. The thin DoF is nice, but you have to be aware of your shooting technique as this lens will point out poor technique in a heartbeat. Don't blame the lens!!The biggest complaint I read is lack of sharpness and too expensive. Well, that's all relative. There's lots of photographers getting really sharp images with the classic look to them. Price, well, I feel the lens is priced to low for what it delivers. Nikon left a lot of money on the table with this one by pricing it to low.Only complaint is I wish Nikon made the filter threads 77mm instead of 72mm.If you are looking for sterile and lifeless images please don't buy this lens.
