Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Do you need adapter for 1DX Mark 1?

A: Unfortunately, there is no way to adapt a Canon RF lens to a Canon EOS body that accepts EF lenses like the 1DX.

Q: 2. I am torn between the 85 and the DS. I am wanting to shoot Street photography with this lens, however I also need fast low light f1.2 for night Street. I do want bokeh and traditional bokeh from a 50 f1.2 is good enough. I'm leaning toward the standard 85 versus the DS as I don't want to lose a stop. Suggestions ?

A: Unless you want "Defocus Smoothing" at all times when shooting at f/1.2, I would say the normal Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM Lens will be more versatile than the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM DS Lens. But, it's a completely personal decision based on your own esthetics.

Q: 3. This lens is working for canon dslr full frame?

A: This lens is specific to the Canon EOS R/RP mirrorless full frame cameras with an RF mount. An EF mount lenses to fit a Canon full frame DSLR would be the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM Lens, B&H # CA8512LEF2. https://bhpho.to/2xdXAou

Q: 4. Does purchase include hood & bag? No Canon hood or bag listed in accessories.

A: As indicated under the “In The Box” section under the Overview tab on our website, the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM Lens, B&H # CA5012LRF, would include the Canon ES-83 Lens Hood and the Canon Lens Case LP1319. Q: 7. Is this lens internal focusing, no external movement when turned on or off, or during autofocus?

A: Yes.

Q: 8. Does this lens work well for macro photography?

A: This is not a macro lens but with the use of close up filters or extension tubes you can achieve macro results.

Q: 9. Buying Cine Lenses for Canon. Does this lens have a long focus throw? Does this lens have smooth F/T Stop transition, instead of "click" stops? For smooth transition of focus and depth of field?

A: Sorry but this is not a cine lens. It is all electronic control with no scales. It would not work on a pro set for the assistant would have no way of controlling the focus or stop. If you want a Canon cine lens here is the link. https://bhpho.to/2A5NLe5

Q: 10. How fast is the autofocus on this? Could it be used for sports for instance in a low light gym?

A: The autofocus on the RF 50mm f/1.2L USM Lens is quite fast. Depending on how close you are to the action and the sensor type of your Canon R series camera, it could be used for shooting sports in a low light setting.

This lens is an amazing tool and will not disappoint wide open. Super sharp at 1.2. Paired with the focusing system on the R line of cameras it is truly incredible. There is vignetting wide open, but it’s 1.2! Plus you want a little character in your glass. Often I enjoy it better as is before post corrections.

I was used to shooting with the Sigma 1.2 art lens for years. I was blown away by ability of this lens. The RF version is even faster at focusing, GREAT at finding the focus and super crisp. RF all the way! I also LOVE that I can change my aperture with the ring on the lens. Game changer.

I just got it. Learning to use it. Lovely. Just lovely. Not for fun. Well, it could be. I learned on a 50mm 1.4. Shot with it for 2 years on a 5D. This lens and an R, using your feet and your photo eye, you will love it.

Exquisite image quality and sharpness - on par if not better than Leica and Zeiss. Next level lens from Canon. There isn't an EF lens that can compare to this RF.

Im not a huge 50mil fan but couldnt pass this one. Rented it for a week and had quite an adventure! The lens is superb optically except its 1 stop darker in the corners compared to the old 50/1.2 EF. Is it bad or not? Well, if you like vignetting - it saves 10 to 30 seconds you usually spend adding it in post. If you dont like vignetting - it will add the same 10 to 30 seconds to remove it in post. As simple as that :)  The sharpness is mind blowing wide open, unlike the old 50 which becomes acceptably sharp at f/2.8. No visible CA. Great resistance to lens flare. Pretty much everything you would expect from an Otus grade lens for about twice cheaper + fast and accurate AF as a bonus. No prob tracking and taking sharp pictures of kids running in random directions.

Sharpness, AF, blah blah blah... All this stuff is just another bonus to the primary characteristic of this lens which is BOKEH. Its definitely there. Any kind of background is not an issue for this lens. You can take beautiful portraits on the city dump!

After Canons claim about EOS R ability to AF at EV-6 with this particular lens I was curious to see what does it mean... Tried to AF in a very dark room, and the AF relaibly worked down to 0.6s ISO 12800 with this lens. Which is ~EV-6 indeed and I think its crazy. Just to give an idea how dark the EV-6 is: if you take a regular 1.4 lens and set your camera to ISO 100 - you will need to wait 128 seconds to get the same level of exposure.

PS: The control ring is a nice add-on. I set it to exposure compensation.

I waited on a back order list for this lens for over 2 months, and after using this lens for a week now i can honestly say it was worth the wait. Thought hard on if I should just get the EF version but I am so glad I decided to hold out fir the new RF model. I own many L series EF lens that I love and use them with adapters on the EOS R5 camera and they work flawless, the big reason I went with this RF was I heard this lens could achieve the look of an 80mm f1.2 as well if you cropped and it’s true. Superb lens it’s like you get two lenses in one.

Every review I read tells a story about the excellent lens and it’s amazing bokeh quality. What they miss is the super good micro contrast giving images that Zeiss/Leica 3D look. The lens character is so amazing that this itself makes getting the EOS R worth it. My Sony Zeiss lenses do not even come close. Technical analysis means nothing And shows only half the story when compared to other lenses.
