Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What is the best lens filter for RF 50mm 1.2?

A: Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM Lens is one of Canon superiors lenses. Canon makes their own UV protecting filters which match well with their L-series lenses optical quality. I will also recommend B+W MRC Nano and Hoya HD glass filters if you are interested on weather seal UV protecting filters.

Q: 2. Is this lens internal focusing, no external movement when turned on or off, or during autofocus?

A: Yes.

Q: 3. Do you need adapter for 1DX Mark 1?

A: Unfortunately, there is no way to adapt a Canon RF lens to a Canon EOS body that accepts EF lenses like the 1DX.

Q: 4. How fast is the autofocus on this? Could it be used for sports for instance in a low light gym?

A: The autofocus on the RF 50mm f/1.2L USM Lens is quite fast. Depending on how close you are to the action and the sensor type of your Canon R series camera, it could be used for shooting sports in a low light setting.

Q: 5. How will this lens perform with video on an R6?

A: This 50mm lens will work great on the R6 for video.

Q: 6. I am torn between the 85 and the DS. I am wanting to shoot Street photography with this lens, however I also need fast low light f1.2 for night Street. I do want bokeh and traditional bokeh from a 50 f1.2 is good enough. I'm leaning toward the standard 85 versus the DS as I don't want to lose a stop. Suggestions ?

A: Unless you want "Defocus Smoothing" at all times when shooting at f/1.2, I would say the normal Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM Lens will be more versatile than the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM DS Lens. But, it's a completely personal decision based on your own esthetics.

Q: 7. Is the focus wheel focus by wire? Or geared?

A: its focus by wire

Q: 8. How’s the chromatic aberration on this lens when opened all the way up? I had the old EF 50mm 1.2 and got rid of it because it was so noticeable shooting anything below a 2.8. Mainly shooting video

A: From our findings, there is little to no chromatic aberration on this lens.

Q: 9. What is the diameter of this lens? As in, if I were to put on a seamless follow focus, what size should I use?

A: The outer diameter is 89.8mm.

Q: 10. Is there an adapter for EF bodies or is it impossible because of the flange distance?

A: No adapter for RF to EF, only EF to RF

This new 50mm 1.2 is simply amazing! Considerable improvements compared to EF version: sharper, focuses faster and extremely accurately with the R camera body (basically, you can get f/1.2 shots all day long), and better control of fringing. This lens still has its own character; it has not gotten too "clinical" as newer lenses seem to be getting lately. A key ability of f/1.2 lenses are their ability to create separation of subject from background (or a 3-D effect), and this lens delivers here extremely well! Out-of-focus areas gently transition into dreamy blur and lift the subject off of background. Naturally, this lens takes in tons of light! With my RP body, I can seriously take shots in near total darkness! You can get very close to subjects, giving it pseudo-macro abilities with a good crop. Additionally, I like the focus limiter and control ring, which make for some very nice enhancements and additional controls. It is large, a tiny bit bigger than an 85 1.4, but feels nicely balanced.
This lens hasn't left my camera body since purchasing, and I imagine it won't for quite some time. I am very pleased with this amazing lens, and think it's worth every penny! All sample shots in this review shot a f/1.2.

Big, heavy, expensive, but that background blur makes it all worth it!

One of the original Canon RF lenses that still performs flawlessly. A favorite of my kit.

Let's just hit the salient point right off the bat, this lens is optically stunning. The rendering and bokeh are great, the sharpness even wide open is phenomenal. It's truly a wonderful lens.

It does have some issues with chromatic aberration wide open, and can suffer contract issues shooting wide open against bright light, but at 1.2 that shouldn't be surprising.

If you're looking for an amazing versatile lens, the RF 50mm 1.2 will be exactly what you're looking for. Whether you're looking to shoot videos or stills, this lens can get the job done. I have multiple RF lenses but you cannot beat the focal length of the 50. If you're on the fence, make the jump. This lens has basically replaced all other lenses in my bag. Great for portraits, product photography, & so much more. The autofocus is insanely quick, making it super easy to capture objects in motion. The build quality of this lens is impeccable, once you just hold it in your hands you'll have absolutely no buyers remorse. Feels like you're holding a precious gem.... But useful of course. Quite hesitating, this is the lens you need.

What a great match with the EOS R, which I purchased just so I could start using this lens. AMAZING for dynamic portraits, great for kids.

I waited and waited for Canon to release an update to the ef 50mm 1.2L, which I saw as too soft wide open, and problematic with its focus shift issues. (I like getting in very close, right where focus-shift would be at its worst.) When Canon finally did come out with a 50mm dream lens, it was on the EOS R. I mulled things over for a year, then finally went for it. So happy I did. The IQ and bokeh are great, and the EOS R's Servo AF makes nailing focus easy, even at f/1.2. No hint of focus shift here at all in the ranges of f/1.8-2.8.

Just crazy about this lens!

I am a prime lens shooter, I almost never use zoom lenses. And the 50mm focal length happens to be my favorite. That being said, this lens is the best I have ever used. And I am a bit of a lens snob. I've used over 50 different lenses over the years, including Zeiss. This Canon lens is just the best.
