Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. is this compatible with M1 MAC?

A: The OWC 12TB Mercury Elite Pro External Hard Drive (USB 3.2 Gen 1) is compatible with a M1 Mac. Depending on the exact model you might need a USB Type-C to USB Type-A adapter.

Q: 2. Can these be stacked, or is heat an issue?

A: The vents on the OWC 8TB Mercury Elite Pro External Hard Drive are located on the sides, and not the top of the drive, so you could potentially stack them, but dues to the shape of the drive and the nature of rotating HDDs, I would not advise it.

Q: 3. I can’t seem to find a FireWire host connection. .??

A: The OWC 16TB Mercury Elite Pro External Hard Drive has 2 Firewire ports on the back of the drive.

Q: 4. What are the minimum system requirements?

A: the OWC 16TB Mercury Elite Pro External Hard Drive BH #OWCME3QH7T16 only requires that a host machine have a USB3, eSATA or Firewire 800 port to work.

Q: 5. can i use this with a U.2 shuttle (4 x nvme drives in Raid 0) on just ONE side, with the second side empty? Do both sides need to be in use / populated for the device to work?

A: Yes, you would need both sides populated on the OWC Mercury Pro U.2 Dual with SoftRAID. In order for this to work properly.

Q: 6. Does this unit power up and power down with your machine?

A: Yes with my MacBook Pro - powered directly and shuts down when the Power down your machine.

Q: 7. Does anyone know if these are fast enough for editing 2K footage off of?

A: The OWC Mercury Elite Pro USB 3.2 Gen 1 External Hard Drive has a maximum transfer speed of 252 MB/s, which would not be recommended for high-resolution video editing.

Q: 8. If you use SPAN (not RAID 0/1) with 2x1TB SSD, what transfer speeds can you expect to get?

A: Lower than RAID 0, but not substantially so.

Q: 9. If USB3.1 Gen-2 supports up to 1250MB/s, why is the enclosure limited to 738MB/s? Is that a hardware limitation?

A: If you have a true USB3.1 Gen2, you can just hit 1GB/s (Samsung EVO). Then some time thereafter, your SSD will saturate and will go about 850MB/s and finally go about 600MB/s depending what SSD brand (EVO versus PRO etc) you are using. The only true USB3.1 Gen2 (USB3.2) that I found capable is on a 2080 video card that I use. So far I have not found a mother board USB3.1 Gen 2 to meet the requirement of 10gb/s.

Q: 10. Does it support SATA III?

A: It will support the connection, but as it has a USB interface it will be limited to USB 3.0 speeds.
