A: I use one of these. Thread size does not matter. The threads allow you to add the tubes together to increase the length of the extension tube. It is best to use a prime lens. For good results you will need to use a tripod and will need a good light source. The depth of field will be very narrow, so you may want to use aperture mode and select a small aperture (i.e. high number).

Q: 4. Would this, by chance, fit a common light stand which I believe, the lower section, is 35mm?

A: It would not if the size is 35mm. The size would have to be 30mm, a 35mm diameter would be too large.
