Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Why is the matched pairs expensive than the single Nt55?

A: The matched pair comes with 2 microphones. The single NT55 comes with 1 microphone.

Q: 2. Will the NT6 capsule pop into the same rycote lyre that comes with the Rode VideoMicro? VideoMicro diameter is 21mm.

A: Yes the NT6 capsule diameter is 20mm and will fit inside the lyre.

Q: 3. Is there a mount for this microphone on a HVX-255?

A: Due to the weight and diameter of the Rode NT4 it is difficult to shock mount this mic on a camera. You are able however to adapt the incuded stand mount the RM3 to your cameras shoe with a simple adapter. The Tether Tools hot shoe adapter features a 3/8 male thread that will support the stand mount using the 3/8 thread adapter that was included with the stand mount.

Q: 4. Is the included female to 2x male XLR cable meant to be just an adapter as it seems short? I would be connecting to MixPre-3

A: The Y-cable that is included with the NT4 stereo microphone is 10.3 feet long and can be used to connect directly to the inputs on a MixPre-3. If a longer length is needed, you can attach standard 3-pin XLR cables onto each side as extensions. The included Y-cable is the Rode NT4-DXLR Stereo 5-Pin XLR to Dual 3-Pin XLR Cable for NT-4 Fixed X/Y Condenser Microphone (B&H # RONT4DXLRCBL).

Q: 5. Can this be used as a stage mic as well? I would be using this to record students in my studio of voice in my living room. Is this a good option for not being in a recording studio?

A: Generally speaking, Large diaphragm microphones are not recommended choices for stage use. They are just too delicate for this application.

Q: 6. Does a Rode NT1000 large diaphragm microphone requires phantom power turned on in a mixer?

A: Yes it does.

Q: 7. I noted that this microphone has 5 pins but my audio recorders are both 3-pin (Marantz PMD661 and Zoom H6). Can I purchase an adapter cable? This may be dumb question. I'm new to this aspect of recording, and I can't seem to find a definitive answer on any website.

A: Three reasons I bought the NT4 is that it comes with a five pin adapter to two three pin plugs, also a five pin adapter to 3.5mm audio adapter and it can be run off an internal 9 volt battery. None of my digital recorders supply Phantom Power . The audio level at analog output is more than sufficient to connect to my Sony PCM-D50.

Q: 8. Is this the same thing as the Rode NT-UBS Mini for an extra $50? They appear functionally identical except for the color.

A: The Rode X XCM-50 is built with improved DSP and is made to work more ideally with voiceover quality in mind. The Rode NT-USB MINI is made more ideally for conferencing, streaming and some podcasting.

Q: 9. The question isn't why are 2 mics more expensive than 1, it is why is there a $100 premium over buying 2 separately. Is it because they are 'matched'?

A: The difference in cost between purchasing two Rode NT55 Compact Condenser Microphones with Interchangeable Capsules as opposed to the Matched Pair item can indeed be credited to the fact that the pair is matched, making them more ideal for recording as a stereo pair.

Q: 10. Would you use these mics on a camera for field reference audio?

A: Yes, the Rode NT55 Compact Condenser Microphone with Interchangeable Capsules could be used on a camera with XLR inputs providing phantom power to capture reference audio. The cardioid capsule included with the NT55 is suggested as opposed to the omni capsule for this application, in order to capture an audio perspective reflective of what the camera is seeing.
