Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is an external viewfinder (a must (required) for this lens?

A: If you want 21mm framelines, no current rangefinder camera has that. You would need the external viewfinder.

Q: 2. will the closer focus diatance work on film cameras?

A: Yes, the close focus feature is possible with any Leica M camera and the Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH. Lens (Black, 2022 Version).

Q: 3. will this be released in black?

A: As per Leica, this 35mm f/1.4 Summilux-M Lens is only being offers in silver at this time.

Q: 4. is this for the steel rim reissue? I heard that there are two versions. 1st version has vignetting. is this the version fixed ?

A: The Leica Lens Hood for 35mm f/1.4 Summilux-M Lens does not vignette the lens. There was a prior version with a rectangular front, but there were no reports of that one vignetting either.

Q: 5. Will this also work on the 35mm Summilux FLE?

A: There are different versions of the 35mm Summilux FLE, but if you can remove the lens hood and it has 46mm diameter threads the Leica Lens Hood for 35mm f/1.4 Summilux-M Lens should work.

Q: 6. Is this lens hood compatible with the 35mm Summicron aspherical?

A: Unsure because this is actually for the 35mm 1.4 Summilux and not the Summicron. However I have the proper lens hood for your 35mm Summicron. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1262800-REG/leica_12470_lens_hood_for_elmarit_m.html

Q: 7. Will this lens work on the Leica M-4? What about the Leica SL2-S with the adapter?

A: Yes the Leica 35mm f/1.4 Summilux-M Lens will work on the M4 film camera or the SL2-S when using the Leica adapter.

Q: 8. What size should be the filter(s) to be used with this lens ?

A: You can find the Series 8 filters on BH by searching for ND filters and then scrolling down to the bottom of the filter size list. They are at the bottom of the list. I use the 0.9 (three stop) filter. The reason for the special filter is that they sit behind the lens hood and are not screwed on. There is a slight noise (do to movement of the filter) which is normal. With the M (240), you can leave the filter on and simply switch between ISO 200 for outdoor photos in daylight and ISO 3200 for evening or indoor photos. (Kudos to Thorsten Overgaard!)

Q: 9. The new Leica 35mm F/1.4 Summilux-M has optical connectors and the M 11 cannot read those and cannot determine what lens is attached. How will this be addressed?

A: The Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH. Lens (Silver, 2022 Version) is a manual lens on the Leica M11 Rangefinder Camera, and all leica M-mount cameras.

Q: 10. Can this fit on a Ef mount or a Nikon D800 camera? What format is this lense for?

A: The 21mm f/1.4 Summilux-M Aspherical Manual Focus Lens has the M-Mount. It would not be compatible with Nikon or Canon DSLRs. It is compatible with Leica, Voigtlander, and Zeiss M-mount rangefinders.

Great resolution, small, compact, light, mechanically perfect, great bokeh; what else could you want from a 50mm?

I recently wrote a review about this lens but I thought I should include a couple extra points. I did a comparison between the Summilux 50/1.4 and several other 50mm prime lenses (Summicron 50/2, Zeiss Planar 50/2, Nokton 50/1.5 ASPH) and did a 'pixel peep' at 100% enlargement. The Summicron was surprisingly the sharpest of the bunch. I expected the Summilux to be sharper, but this was not the case. That being said, the difference was mininal and in real-world usage nobody would ever see the difference. Where the Summilux 50/1.4 ASPH really shines is in two ways: 1. The visual field is exceptionally flat, giving a very natural 'look' to your images. Distortion is extrememly minimal with this lens. 2. The out-of-focus area or 'bokeh' is exceptionally good -- better than the Summicron. Center-focus subjects are razor sharp, and the backgrounds melt away in a smooth, liquid, and very pleasing manner. The only other lens that I've tried that has a similar bokeh is the Nokton 50mm F1.5 ASPH -- it also has a very pleasant bokeh. But the Nokton suffers from chromatic aberration in high-contrast situations. The Summilux doesn't have this problem. All things considered, the Summilux 50/1.4 ASPH is a fabulous lens. It's so good I'm considering selling my other 50mm primes and just keeping this one as my main lens.
