Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. Does the camera come with the exposure calculator and the black box to hold exposed film , or it's just the camera ? I saw the kit here on B&H but I wouldn't use the film anyway , just the photo paper .
A: the Iford Obscura Pinhole Camera does not include an exposure calculator, or a black box to hold exposed media.
Q: 2. How many rolls of film are in a brick of Ilford XP2 Super 400 120B&W? Is there any discount for quantity? Thanks!
A: With this type of film, we purchase it in gross bulk from the manufacturer and sell it per roll. We do not have any brick packs that we sell in this particular instance. Our film is already discounted to the lowest possible price we can offer it to you at regardless of the quantity you purchase.
Q: 3. Im learning to develop B&W negatives on my own. Since this is a chromogenic film, can this film be developed in the standard B&W developing process or would this require a different process?
A: I would not try to personally develop this film. There are professional labs that still develop it in c-41 chemistry. I only work in 120 film and it is my film of choice if I want to make HUGE enlargements in B&W. It has a wide latitude and is extremely sharp. T. Nell (marina my wife, placed the order)
Q: 4. Is this the type of paper you can put directly into the camera, or is it strictly for enlarger/contact sheet?
A: You can choose to expose either film or paper, or use the paper for enlarging/printing/contact sheets. It's totally up to you! With the Ilford Obscura Pinhole camera, you can use the provided 20 sheets 4x5" Ilford Multigrade IV RC Paper to make paper negatives. The pros of shooting with paper is that you can load it in a darkroom with a safelight (easier loading), but the cons are pretty significant, such as lower ASA, limited tonal reproduction, and a more difficult reprinting workflow.
Q: 5. When using this film, is a filter recommended?
A: What kind of filter do you think of? This film, like any BW-film, can be used with filters. It is not a question of the film. It is a question of the result you like to achieve. I would always recommend using filters when working with BW-film in the landscape. Yellow, orange, red turn in different degrees blue darker and the own filter-color brighter. By that you get a darker sky (BW-film mostly translates the color blue not dark enough) or you gain contrast, e.g. between green and red/yellow. Depending on your subject this might be useful. I would be careful doing portraits. Red cheeks or lips are getting pale with a red- or orange-filter. Red-filters are the only ones you have to correct even using TTL-metering. Give plus one exposure. Please mind: you cannot achieve these filter-effects digitally afterwards!! Because if you scan the film you have already a black and white negative. Digital filters are only working turning a colored picture into black and white. The fun with XP 2 is that you can shoot it at different ISOs, let's say between 100 and 400. Best use it at 200 ISO (if the scene is bright enough) - this gives you the sharpest results, if the sun goes away change ISO to 400 within the same film roll - the results get more grainy. Then give it to the next color-lab (C-41 process) to develop. (In fact it is a color-film that produces black and white pictures.) Have fun!
Q: 6. What does 100' mean?
A: this is a bulk roll of 100 feet of film. You will need to cut and load it into the 35mm film canisters yourself.
Q: 7. What is the current expiration date on XP2 bulk rolls?
A: This film is currently not in stock and takes about 1-2 weeks and so the expiration date is not available at this time.
Q: 8. I've got a simple question. Ilford doesn't make color film. If they are why are they holding out on me!! lol. So what color film is in this camera?
A: This is a specific ISO 400 color negative film made by Ilford.
Q: 9. What is the expiration date?
A: If the films posted in our site are about to expire, a date will be shown. Generally there is plenty of life on the film.
Q: 10. What is the expiration date now?
A: Expiration date 02/20206 as of 8/15/2022
