The HiKey Illuminated Background from Angler is a 6 x 7' free-standing background that can be internally illuminated using strobe or LED light sources, allowing photographers to take photos with the light behind their subject. It acts like a giant 6 x 7' softbox, making it simple to shoot high-key photos of portraits, products, and fashion. Zippered openings on each side of the background make it easy to insert a strobe or LED monolight, with a reflector. Doing this evenly lights the background from each side, filling it with light. The HiKey Illuminated Background lights a subject from behind like a large softbox. Easily eliminate extra shadows on the background and produce HiKey images for portraits, products, and style.

A sturdy, integrated metal frame and four frame supports allow the Illuminated Background to freely stand on its own. So, no matter where it is set up, you can have background lighting behind your subject.

A flexible frame allows the background to collapse down to one third its size. This allows the background to be easily transported from one location to another or stored in the included carrying case.

Large, zippered openings on each side of the Illuminated Background make it easy to insert strobe and LED monolights, with reflectors, into the background maximizing the light output with an even spread from each side. The 19" deep background has ample room to accommodate a variety of light units.

A touch-fastener strip around the edge enables attaching backgrounds or colored fabrics to alter the lights color. Change a photo's mood without having to carry spools of paper.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Has anyone used this for video production to simulate a white infinity cyc? I was thinking about lighting this with Aputure lights and was curious if anyone has done that setup...

A: It is possible to use the Manfrotto HiLite for video production. However, we would not recommend using an LED more than 200 watts being that this product is not intended for use with continuous lighting.

Q: 2. Does this background work well with video projection/projectors if the lights are not used on the inside? Are you able to see through the material if the backdrop is not lit?

A: We use this for backyard movies and it works brilliantly! The black backing means we can use it earlier in the evening before it’s pitch dark. I tried a white movie backdrop but that required it to be really late at night for the projector to show up. Since I already owned this for photography it was a nice surprise to see how well it worked with our projector.

Q: 3. What are the dimensions of this backdrop in it's case? I need something I can get on a commercial airline.

A: The collapsed size is about 40.6 x 40.6 x 3.1".

Q: 4. Any suggestions on how many stops should I meter the Lastolite hilite relative to the main? YouTube suggest 2 stops more but it is not working for me.

A: It really depends on the distance between your subject and the background. I often do 2 stops when subject is 7 to 10 feet in front or more, but if my subject is closer, I will try to lower the wrap around effect by lowering the light to 1 stop more than the key, or less. I know some people are not even trying to get pure white because of this and will settle with a very light grey, then make it white is post production.

Q: 5. What would happen if you used colored gels on the speedlites inside the hilite? Anyone have time to try this out?

A: speed light will add color to the background but in order to illuminate the background more power in need. I would suggest a strobe unit of a least 500 watts in order to do so properly.

Q: 6. Are a couple of Godox AD200's sufficient for lighting the inside of these? What head should I use?

A: You will want enough power to be 2 stops brighter than the light on your subject when using the Manfrotto HiLite Illuminated White Background (6 x 7') BH #MAHL67. You would want to use the barebulb of the AD200.

Q: 7. What is the lowest cost lighting set up for this Lastolite in a small garage? Thank you.

A: The lowest cost kit to use with this HiLite background is the Savage 2,000W Location LED Light Kit B&H # SALED2000K.

Q: 8. How do you remove yellow stains. Do notice the white screen turns yellow after some time?

A: I have the same problem too, and haven't found a solution. It's got to the point it's unusable now.

Q: 9. Is it possible use different colored light bulbs inside and turn this into a free standing illuminated green screen?

A: Yes, it would be possible to use colored light bulbs in the Manfrotto HiLite Illuminated Background (White, 4.6 x 3.6').

Q: 10. How is it illuminated

A: You would place a light source into the slots on both sides which then illuminates the background.

Just bought this for headshots that require a white backdrop, and I love it. I hate carrying around white paper, and this is so much easier to just pop open and use. Highly recommend!

I have been tied between the Manfrotto version and this cheaper Angler product which was $266 cheaper and am glad that I took a chance. Seems to be sturdily built and they include a spare stretcher bar. Bit tricky to collapse the first time but there are good videos on youtube. For $379 this was a great buy.
