A: The NTG3B is a great mic, but it is directional and has a narrow field for pickup. Additionally, it is not intended for use from that far of a distance. The mic should be positioned much closer to the audience and if you are recording the audience as a group, rather than recording individual people, a stereo mic would be a better choice since it has a wider field for pickup. Depending on the size of the audience and characteristics of the room, you may want to use more than one microphone positioned above them. A: Well they're different in many ways. The NTG3 requires Phantom power to work, the noise floor is less and it sounds cleaner. The NTG4+ can work with the internal battery, which lasts a lot and it is really impressive, that also helps cause your recorder battery will last more. But the NTG4 requires more gain from the preamp so it can get a bit noisier. So, yes the Ntg 3 sounds better, but I would say you have to think what could work better with the gear you already have and the type of work you'll do.
