Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Are these lights silent? What about after a year? I've worked with low-end flo kits that buzzed and I don't want to waste my money on buzzy lights.

A: They don't have a buzz to them. They have a slight little noise but it's tolerable. They are not very bright though :/

Q: 2. Can these be mounted to a wall? I don't have room for the stands.

A: Yes. Please review the following items Impact 3" Baby Pin Wall Plate BH #IMSRP115P • MFR #SRP-115P https://bhpho.to/3Kdmqbb

Q: 3. Could this be used to shoot a video interview in a small room with a DSLR? I want to make sure I have enough lighting for 24fps at 1/50th...? It doesn't have to have a lot of emotion or anything, just has to be well lit to look like quality recording.

A: Yes this will work very well. If the room is small, you may have too much light with all the bulbs installed. The light can be easily adjusted by distance to the subject and number of bulbs in each fixture. I have been very pleased with this unit. Lots of good light, at around 5200K as I recall. Very well constructed and should give years of good service.

Q: 4. I am reading in the reviews that these light are not good for "key lighting." I intend to light a green screen. What is "key lighting.?

A: The key light is simply the main light you will set your exposure to. Any light can be a key light. If the light is appropriate to the shoot is a different issue based on camera settings and size of the area. these lights can be used for a green screen if the area to light is rather small.

Q: 5. Can the bulbs be illuminated individually? can you either switch off one or many bulbs or unscrew them so only 1 or two are on at a time?

A: Although each socket cannot be switched on/off individually, you can remove as many bulbs as you wish and still operate the light. Personally, I switch between setups with two 64W CFL bulbs and two empty sockets, and setups with four 26W bulbs and both work perfectly (have been doing so for about a year). To make things even easier, the white section on the softboxes are removable, so switching out bulbs for a different color balance or different bulbs is easy. I hope that answers your question!

Q: 6. What is the weight of the whole kit? including the bag?

A: I use the three light kit almost exclusively with the soft box covers. Produces great light for VLOG production and fill light for shooting portraits. I purchased another IMPACT carry bag to make it easier to carry the kit, extension cords, etc.

Q: 7. Do the lights get hot? or are they cool bulbs?

A: I would say cool . Now, I usually use gloves to unscrew, as they are slightly warm to the touch but I must say I use the gloves more to protect the bulb because I heard years ago it's better not to allow the oils from your fingers to coat these types of bulbs. Plus if I happen to apply too much pressure unscrewing, bulb will not shatter in my hand. Use of this kit has been critical in the videography business. Definitely do not regret this purchase.

Q: 8. The description says the bag holds 2 monolights, and stands, but the kit comes with three?

A: It holds all three, though i don't recommend taking them apart. I use the bag to transport the stands and move the box assembled. I hate putting the boxes together.

Q: 9. I'm relatively new to video and lighting, but I bought this kit about five months ago when it was up for a one day sale here on B&H. My question is, would I be able to connect a dimmer of some sort to this light and adjust the light output? I know you can do that for some lights, just not sure if that's something you can do with florescent lights and this fixture in particular. Thanks in advance.

A: Unfortunately, since the lamps of this kit are self-ballasted, standard in-line dimmers would not work and there is risk of burning out the lamp. A good way to reduce the output is with the use of a neutral density filter on the lights. The Rosco E-Colour #210 .6 ND filter, B&H# ROE210S is a safe bet and will reduce the light by 2 stops of light. Please see the image below for reference.

Q: 10. I am new to lighting set up, can I switch the bulb holders to hold flashes/sped light?

A: If your question relates to re-dedicating the stand to hole another fixture , then the answer is yes. I don't have the gear handy to measure, but tripods/stands have various stud diameters and I'd look at the Impact product specification to get the size. From there, you can see if your fixture will mate onto that stud.If you look closely at the thumb nut on the bottom of the fixture, this is the means of tightening it onto the stud.

Bought this for the April 8 eclipse so haven't used it yet. Arrived spotless, no issues.
Fits both Sony FE 200-600mm and Sony 70-200.
Will post a question asking for the ND value.

B&H and Mr StarGuy supplied my first solar lens, why not my next two. Camera ready and looking to get some shots of just before totality and after w/ a 500mm + 2x teleconverter and cropped censored camera. Previous attempts have been excellent. Looking forward to more.

Moderately priced, along with the filter also it came with a professional level solar eclipse viewing glass for free. Overall well built solar filter. I attached it on the top of Nikon 600mm F4 VR lens. Satisfied with the rep who helped me choose the right filter size.

I really haven't time to use this on a regular basis. I did manage to take one picture of the sun with this filter and I am satisfied with the results. It works as advertised and will be in great use on the 8th, weather permitting. Looks like it'll be a cloudy day in Texas!!! I will definitely use it for other shots. Definitely worth the cost. I know that some are disappointed at the construction, that it's not aluminum, it doesn't need to be, especially on a very large lens! I like it because of the light weight and ease of use.

I just received my 86-117 filter. The fit on my 150-600 lens is great, and the filter is clean and in great shape. Can't wait to try it out on 4/8.
