The black HD Pentax DA 20-40mm f/2.8-4 ED Limited DC WR Lens from Pentax is a high performance standard length zoom lens for K-mount APS-C cameras. Its 35mm focal length equivalency is 30.5-61.5mm providing a versatile and practical range for wide-angle to standard length shooting. It is the first zoom lens in the Pentax Limited Series line and brings with it a durable, weather-sealed body, HD lens coating and an optical design consisting of one ED element and one super-low dispersion element.

The f/2.8-4 maximum aperture enables effective low light shooting and, at the wide-angle end, control over its shallow depth of field for images that place sharp focus on the subject with a pleasing out of focus background. An in-lens direct current (DC) focus motor provides smooth and quiet autofocus action and its Quick-Shift Focus System enables rapid shift from autofocus to manual focus mode.

The lens barrel and the included hood are made from high-grade aluminum alloy, distance and depth of field scales are clearly marked on the barrel and a smooth rotating, knurled ring provides manual focus control. SP (Super Protect) coating on the front and rear lens elements repels dust, water and grease to help maintain peak performance.

With its 2x zoom coverage of 20-40mm, this lens offers focal length coverage from 30.5 to 61.5mm in the 35mm format when mounted on a PENTAX K-series DSLR. This covers a practical set of frequently used focal lengths and is ideal as a versatile everyday lens. Its maximum aperture of f/2.8 at the wide-angle end of the zoom is effective in low light and provides shallow depth of field focus.

This lens has been treated with the PENTAX-developed HD coating, a high grade, multi-layer coating that reduces unwanted reflection, allowing the user to capture high-contrast images free of flare and ghosting.

Shoot discreetly with in-lens, direct current (DC) Auto Focus motor operation for smooth & quiet performance.

The Quick-Shift Focus System allows instant switching from autofocus to manual focus operation.

With seven special seals to prevent intrusion of water, moisture and dust, this is the first lens of the "Limited" series to feature the PENTAX-original weather-resistant construction. With a handsome and durable aluminum alloy barrel and weather-sealing, this lens is able to perform in almost any shooting condition.

The PENTAX SP (Super Protect) coating on the front and rear lens elements repels dust, water and grease to keep your lens clean and your images sharp.

The ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass and a super-low dispersion glass element in this lens' optics deliver clear, high resolution imagery with edge-to-edge sharpness, throughout the entire zoom range.

Enhanced with a rounded nine-blade diaphragm at the wide apertures for optimal optical performance and gorgeous bokeh effects.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is there a filter holder/system for this?

A: Unfortunately, there are no filter holders/systems being offered for this lens just yet. Please check periodically for updates as they become available.

Q: 2. will it work as a full frame on the new Pentax k1?

A: The Pentax HD Pentax DA 40mm f/2.8 Limited Lens is designed for use on APS-C sensor cameras; however, many owners and users of the lens have often stated that they happily use this lens on their Pentax 35mm film cameras and the lens does cover the full image frame. As such, the lens should also work for use on the full-frame Pentax K-1 DSLR camera. (Do note this claim has only been made about the Pentax HD Pentax DA 40mm f/2.8 Limited Lens, and does not apply to other Pentax DA Limited lenses).

Q: 3. What is the clip-on cap size when using the hood? Want to replace the push-on cap.

A: The only caps we have for the Pentax HD Pentax DA 20-40mm f/2.8-4 ED Limited DC WR Lens (Black) fit on the lens not the hood. Like these, https://bhpho.to/43YMlhm .

Q: 4. I see this is for a mirrorless camera, but a KAF mount. Will it work with my K-3II? Thanks Jeremy

A: Unfortunately this lens is only designed to work on the Pentax K-01 mirrorless camera.

Q: 5. Who makes this lens?

A: The Pentax HD PENTAX-D FA 15-30mm f/2.8 ED SDM WR Lens is manufactured by Pentax.

Q: 6. How will this lens behave on a FF body like the K1?

A: The Pentax HD Pentax DA* 11-18mm f/2.8 ED DC AW Lens is designed for cropped sensor cameras only. The Pentax K-1 does have a cropped sensor mode so you could use this lens. You will only be using a small section of the sensor and will get a small file size.

Q: 7. Product description mentions an “optional heating device”. What would that be?

A: An example of a dew heater for the Pentax HD Pentax DA* 11-18mm f/2.8 ED DC AW Lens is this Neewer 15.7" USB Lens Heater for Camera & Telescope Lenses. https://bit.ly/3OaLkNn

Q: 8. Would you recommend this lens for portraits?

A: For portraits, a longer lens such as 85mm or more is recommended. A 15-30mm would be too distorted for portraiture. This 85mm would be a better option: https://bhpho.to/3dldCD4

Q: 9. Will this work with a K3 as well as the listed K3 II, etc.?

A: Yes, the Pentax DA* 11-18mm F/2.8 ED DC AW lens is compatible with the Pentax K3 camera.

Q: 10. Is this lens ideal for astrophotography?

A: It is a nice one for it. It depends on what you are trying to capture. I used it this summer to catch a small portion of the tree line along with the sky. I also used the D FA*70-200 to capture a different perspective. I use this lens primarily for architecture and real estate. It will do nicely if your main need is for astrophotography.. The real key to star and sky shots is the astro tracer function in the k3 and k1, though (I shoot with the k1). You will absolutely love this lens.

I like this lens a lot. Yes, it has a limited focus zoom range and at f:2.8 - 4.0 it is not the fastest lens in my kit. However, it encompasses the general needs of a normal zoom and produces incredibly sharpe images.

Have been looking for lens to replace the Sigma whos only fault was poor balance on the KP. Plus I had the urge to at least own one limited in my lifetime. Build quality of the lens is on par with the old screw mount Super Takamers for those of us old enough to remember the good old days. When no plastics was used in lens construction. So far optical quality on this lens is superb, and beats the Sigma in the common range in my opinion. The Sigma still has a home on my K20. So far I.ve found that the focal length markings are quite accurate. This at this point is a partial review and basic impressions. Will follow up later after I put some time in the field.

I admit I have a strong preference for prime lenses. I've been a Pentaxian since the 80s, and while I've had many zooms, I've never loved any of them. This one is different. Images are pleasing, despite minor compromises that other reviewers cover well. It is small enough to be a go-anywhere lens and is surprisingly light and well-balanced on the camera (K-3). Autofocus is adequate. That's even true for candid shots if you preset the focus with the distance scale before raising the camera to eye (remember that old skill from the days of manual focus?). All-in-all, it's a keeper.

Gracias B&H

Purchased this with for a K-70 (I'm an amateur / dad photographer). Really love this lens. Zoom and aperture are great for both portraits and group shots. Perfect for group settings -- the perfect lens for get togethers like backyard BBQs. I added a UV filter to make wiping off the end easy which worked out well when I had a splattering of rain interrupt my afternoon. Quality of build it great as well. This lens will be in my kit for awhile.

This lens is a pleasure to use and takes very high quality pictures. As someone else told me, it is like having 2 prime lenses (20 and 40 mm) in one housing. The only problem I had was I initially purchased a 55 mm Tiffen UV filter to protect the lens. BIG mistake. As I learned the hard way, never put a cheap UV filter on an expensive lens. It degrades resolution. I replaced the junk Tiffen with a B+W UV Haze filter and image quality is excellent. See the photo for a crop of images taken at F/2.8 and 20 mm focal length, with No filter and a B+W UV-Haze filter. I can not see any difference. While the Tiffen image (not shown here) was badly degraded.

Bought this 20-40mm lens in the silver edition to match my Silver Pentax KP.! Very solid build !! That’s normal for a Pentax Limited lens!! On a Aps-c camera this I would be a 31-61mm, little odd but still will make for a good allaround lens!!

It has not left my KP since I received it. Pictures are very sharp edge to edge at all focal lengths. I'm very pleased with how close it can focus so I can get relatively wide close up shots. Even at small apertures it is very sharp. The sundial in the photo was taken at f/16. It was cropped to 8x10 plus a minimal additional crop. This object is 2 1/2 in diameter.
Not sure about hello kitty settings (forgive me for the subject matter )

Gives lovely images - a good alternative as a 'standard' lens for a Pentax APS-C camera.
