Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this mic compatible with Nikon D90?

A: Unfortunately, the ME-1 Stereo Microphone is not compatible with the Nikon D90 as the D90 does not have an external mic input.

Q: 2. Considering this stereo set and the single version. What I need it for is capturing audio from multiple speakers when I don't have enough inputs into my camera. Is the stereo version really necessary?

A: If you are okay recording in mono than just get one mic. If you want to record in stereo you will need the stereo set.

Q: 3. It is not clear to me whether this mic can be made to switch on, or whether the push button has to be held the whole time. I need a mic that turns on and stays active. Question mark?

A: When you push the button it stays on

Q: 4. How is power

A: This is a dynamic microphone and does not require external or phantom power.

Q: 5. Can you connect this to an iPad for capturing audio while shooting video?

A: I use mine with an iPhone 7, via two adapters: an aftermarket TRS to TRRS and Apple's TRRS to Lightning. It works great and I couldn't discern a difference in quality between recording with a Zoom H1 and the iPhone.

Q: 6. What is the thread on the outside of this microphone? I'm working to create a custom mount for a pair of them and would like to find suitable hardware to mount them.

A: Shure lists the thread size as 7/8"-14 UNF-2B. All relevant installation dimensions for the MX395 are provided by Shure here: http://service.shure.com/s/article/mx395-installation-dimensions?language=en_US You can find additional information in the user manual which also includes a diagram showing all measurements of the mic on page 11 (use the page numbers printed on the pages, not the pdf page numbers): http://www.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/89562.pdf

Q: 7. How do I connect a single or pair of these mics to a Sony A7VR or Sony equivalent camera?

A: The Sennheiser MKH 8020 Compact Omnidirectional Condenser Microphone require an XLR to XLR cable and 48V phantom power to function. The Sony a7R V Mirrorless Camera has a 3.5mm mic input as well as the Multi Interface Shoe. In order to connect and power either one or two of the MKH 8020 mics to the camera you will need to use a separate active XLR adapter/mixer or an external recorder. One of the best options is the Sony XLR-K3M Dual-Channel Digital XLR Audio Adapter Kit with Shotgun Microphone which connects to the camera using a cable-free digital connection through the Multi-Interface Shoe. Another option is the TASCAM CA-XLR2d-AN XLR Microphone Adapter Kit for Cameras (B&H # TACAXLR2DAN) which will connect through the camera's 3.5mm mic input. The Comica Audio CVM-AX3 Dual-Channel Audio Mixer for DSLRs (B&H # COCVMAX3) is a budget-friendly alternative that will also connect through the camera's 3.5mm mic input. The three adapters mentioned all have two channels with phantom power which will allow you to connect both mics at the same time.

Q: 8. I have one 8020, if I want to get a pair, is it better to buy a pair or buy another one, i guess my question is, does the single version makes any difference with the pair version?

A: In terms of matching capsules, it is more ideal to purchase the Sennheiser MKH 8020 Compact Omnidirectional Condenser Microphone as a set, however purchasing two individual microphones will still provide great results when used as a pair.

Q: 9. I was wondering if this microphone is compatible with the Nikon D500 camera? And how's the performance of this microphone? I did read the reviews on this microphone but I thought that I would like to get some new reviews on this microphone. Thank You!

A: I have the Nikon D5300 and it is compatible. I mainly use it for taping Vlogs and it works very well. Much better audio quality than camera alone. It will pick-up some extraneous noise, but it is limited. I found it worth the investment.

Q: 10. Can this be used on passive and powered monitor systems?

A: Neither. You would connect this to a return on a stage box, either an aux return, or if you have an extra monitor return.
