The HLD-7 Battery Grip from Olympus is designed for use with the OM-D E-M1 Micro Four Thirds digital camera. With one battery in the grip and another in the camera, you can capture approximately 680 shots per charge. The HLD-7 features a shutter release, two control dials and two function buttons for shooting vertically, in order to afford the same ease of operation you enjoy when shooting in horizontal position. Its dust- and splash-proof design also complements the weather resistant construction of the E-M1 for shooting in inclement conditions. Additionally, battery and grip sections are separated, and an optional Grip Strap GS-5 is available for added security. For long periods of continuous shooting, you can use the optional AC Adapter AC-3 to conserve battery power.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does the HLD-7 include the battery, or is that a separate purchase?

A: That is a separate purchase since a battery does not come with the grip. In my case I opted for several of the third party batteries which included a nice wall charger too and after a couple of years of regular everyday use work quite well.

Q: 2. Is there clearance for shifting the lens up so that it doesn't hit the OM-D EVF housing overhang?

A: The KIPON Shift Lens Mount Adapter for Olympus OM Lens to Micro Four Thirds Camera will not hit the EVF overhang on the camera.

Q: 3. Will it work with the E-M1 Mark iii?

A: YES, see page 24 of E-M1 Mark III manual https://learnandsupport.getolympus.com/sites/default/files/media/files/2020/02/E-M1Mk3_ENU_00.pdf

Q: 4. Does anyone know how the size of this on an EM1 compares to an X1?

A: The HLD-& is the one needed for the EM1: https://bhpho.to/35AONyC

Q: 5. Are both the battery level for the camera and battery grip displayed in the camera information? display

A: No, when using a battery in the Olympus HLD-9 Power Battery Grip and in the camera, the camera will only show the battery level for the one it is currently drawing power from. It will not show battery level for both batteries simultaneously.

Q: 6. Does the camera use one battery and then switch to the other? in other words can i take an unattended 6 hours live composite exposure?

A: If you go to the Custom menu and select K utility;select battery priority, then select pbh battery. This will use the battery in the power battery holder first, it will automatically switch to the body battery next. Should get what you are looking for

Q: 7. Will the HLD-9 work with the new OM1 Camera?

A: Olympus HLD-9 Power Battery Grip BH #OLHLD9 will not work with the OM SYSTEM OM-1 Mirrorless Camera BH #OMOM1. OM SYSTEM HLD-10 Power Battery Holder BH #OMHLD10 will work with the OM SYSTEM OM-1 Mirrorless Camera BH #OMOM1.

Q: 8. What is the size of the DC jack?

A: The Olympus HLD-9 Power Battery Grip uses the Olympus AC-5 AC Adapter, BH #OLAC5OMD (https://bhpho.to/31X2CIX). Olympus instructions say to only use the specified power source.

Q: 9. Does anyone know how the size of this on EM1 compares to X1 ? in the hand.

A: The dimensions of the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with the Olympus HLD-9 Power Battery Grip would be approximately 5.6 x 5.3 inches. While you do not list the full brand/model name of the X1 item you listed above, if you are referring to the Leica X1 Digital Compact Camera, its dimensions would be 4.9 x 2.3 x 1.3" in inches. As such, the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II with the HLD-9 would be larger in your hand compared to the Leica X1 Digital Camera.

Q: 10. Please can you tell me if the optional AC Adapter AC-3 actually charges the battery as well?

A: No, it does not charge the battery as well. It is only an external power source.

My hands are medium sized so I find this grip to be a great help for both balance and vertical grip. Having the shutter and some control devices on the grip make it a seamless operation.

This is a welcome addition to the OM-D E-M1. It is well suited for your entire hand gripping the camera. The added battery power is an advantage when shooting all day. Because the OM-D E-M1 has a side fitting for the SD card, you do not need to remove the battery holder/grip to change SD cards. The OM-D E-M10 does not have this feature. On that camera you have to remove the grip to access the SD card. You do have to remove the grip to access the battery for the camera. I leave the grip on all the time. It restores a great balance to the camera when using certain lenses, plus, the tripod fitting is in the middle of the grip. You will not regret purchasing this item especially if you like to shoot vertically...all controls for the vertical position.

It feels heavy at first but you get used to it. I love having all controls when taking portraits. Seats perfectly and looks great. Very happy!

The HLD-9 on my E-M1MarkIII is a perfect addition to make shooting sports in portrait orientation. I should have bought this a long time ago. I use back button focus and when I connected the HLD-9, it automatically knew that the AEL/AFL button was my back button focus. It's also easier to hold the camera with my long 40-150 Pro lens.
