The 58mm Tiffen Black Pro-Mist 4 Filter helps to reduce the value of the highlights while slightly lowering the overall contrast. This filter is especially useful for smoothing out and softening facial wrinkles and other blemishes. While designed for use with movies, this filter can also be used for fashion and beauty applications. Unlike a traditional diffusion or soft focus filter, Pro-Mist filters provide little loss of detail across the image. The 4 density provides more contrast and highlight reduction than the 3, but less than the 5, while still allowing for a soft, pastel-like quality of light.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does filter performance is affected using an adapter for a lens of another diameter?

A: No

Q: 2. Thia filter absorbs all UV light. What are the advantages and disadvantages of absorbing all UV light.

A: UV 2A rated filters are recommended for photographers who are going to be doing shoots at higher elevations such as mountains etc, where the UV Haze that is present in the atmosphere has a different level of effect than it does closer to sea level. Essentially at higher elevations there are greater amounts of UV light present which need to be filtered out for clearer images. They remove the bluish cast caused by UV light. In general there are no disadvantages to this filter.

Q: 3. I'd like to use this with the kit lens that came with the Sony FS7, which takes a 95mm thread. The lens specs say nothing about coarse thread only that it's 95mm. Will the coarse thread damage the threading on my lens?

A: If the lens you own uses 95mm filters, then it is a coarse thread (1.0mm) filter pitch by standard. Most all lenses with filter threads 86mm and above are 1.0mm coarse thread filter pitch.

Q: 4. Why are these labeled "Digital?" Will they work fine with film cameras?

A: Although this kit is shown as the Tiffen 58mm Digital Essentials Filter Kit, these same filters can also work on a film camera.

Q: 5. Excuse me,does it can be used in protecting ZEISS CP.3??

A: This filter will fit any lens with a 95mm coarse filter thread.

Q: 6. Can this filter be used with the Sony Ax700 Camcorder? Is an adaptor needed?

A: Yes, the Sony FDR-AX700 4K Camcorder has a 62mm filter thread, which is compatible with the Tiffen 62mm Black Pro-Mist 1/4 Filter.

Q: 7. What is the recommended filter factor?

A: The Tiffen 58mm 812 Warming Filter has a filter factor of 1/3 stop.

Q: 8. What is the main difference between the Blakck Pro-Mist and the Regular Pro-Mist filters?

A: Tiffen’s website state the following: The Pro-Mist filter is a popular motion picture effect that creates a special "atmosphere" by softening excess sharpness and contrast. It generates a pearlescent halo around highlights. Lighter grades are useful in toning down the excessive sharpness and contrast of contemporary film and lens combinations. The Black Pro-Mist offers all the benefits of the Pro-Mist filter in a more subtle form. Highlight flares are controlled. Contrast is lowered, but with less lightening of shadows for a more delicate effect. Tones down excessive sharpness to create the "film look".

Q: 9. Will this Filters (52mm) will work with Drop In Filter Holder for Canon 6mm F/4 II IS lens ?

A: These filters are designed to screw on to lenses with 52mm filter threads at the end of the lens.

Q: 10. As far as the filters go, how do I know which one to buy. I mean this in a the sense that I am on sure which one will fit my lens and not the effect range.

A: We list most all current lenses on our website, one method would be to reference the lens there and under the specifications we post the filter thread size. As well under the Accessories tab we post compatible/recommended filters which will also designate the size. Another method is to remove the lens cap from the lens, and on the underneath side it will reference the lens' filter thread size. Or you can simply email us with and let us know which specific lens you have, and we can confirm what filter size you need for the lens. You may email askbh@bhphoto.com with your inquiry.

The Glimmerglass 1/2 is nice. The sharp edges are reduced but I still have detail. And being able to quickly pop off the filter for certain shots is awesome!
