16 high-quality, low-noise preamps are on hand right from the device, accepting inputs over XLR, TA3, and TA5 connections. These preamps outperform all previous Sound Devices pres by any measurable spec. All of them provide 3-band EQs, analog limiting, high-pass filters, adjustable delays, and phantom power.
Need 32 channels of Dante in and out? The Scorpio is equipped for that. It also handles AES I/O and gives you 12 analog outputs. Multiple headphone outs are on hand to suit any kind of situation. Even communication headsets can be accommodated.
Use the Scorpio to mix up to 12 individual buses, all in a compact form factor that works equally well in an over-the-shoulder rig or a mobile environment. With an onboard engine that makes use of three FGPA circuits and six ARM processors, the Scorpio can handle complex routing schemes, pushing audio through its 64-bit engine to ensure a high-quality sound for your demanding, in-the-field needs.
The Scorpio boasts a 256GB internal SSD for recording audio straight to the device, though two SD card slots are on hand for redundancy. Simultaneous recording is supported—though that, of course, might be redundant to say.
The accurate, onboard timecode generator boasts its own battery to hold timecode for up to four hours after you power off the device.
Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. what does 32-Bit (A/D Conversion) mean on the spec list, does it mean If I want to record 32-bit, I will need to connect it to computer?
A: The 32-bit specification refers to the amount of audio information the Sound Devices 833 8-Channel / 12-Track Multitrack Field Recorder is capable of capturing while recording in reference to bit depth. 32-bit recording captures more information mainly due to its floating-point format versus traditional fixed-point bit depths of 16 and 24 bit. This, in essence, allows for a much wider dynamic range to be captured and makes it hard to record clipped or distorted signals. Sound Devices publishes a useful article on their site that explains this in depth and can be found here: https://bit.ly/3SGcsE5
Q: 2. Is there a controller*Cl8 or Cl9*for Scorpio? Like 788T
A: There is a whole list of third party controllers that you can use, I like the most the iCON Platform M+ (with the D2 display), which is what I personally use myself. But if I could afford it, I would buy the Sound Devices CL16
Q: 3. Can this bag be configured to house the Zoom F6?
A: The ORCA OR-332 Audio Mixer Bag for Sound Devices Scorpio, 888, and 688 would not be recommended for the Zoom F6. From Orca, the recommended bag would be the OR-268 (B&H # OR268). The K-Tek KSF6 (B&H #KTKSF6) would also be a good choice.
Q: 4. Kindly what's the difference between this model Small-X and the model named Small (without X: #KSTGS)?
A: The "X" comes with a rain bag. Thw small, without the "X" is no longer available.
Q: 5. Will it fit the mixpre 10-T?
A: K-Tek KSTGS Specs: Compatibility; Sound Devices 833 Sound Devices 888 Sound Devices SL-2 Sound Devices 633 Sound Devices SD744T Zaxcom Maxx Zaxcom Nova Fostex FM3 Fostex FM4 PSC DV Promix 3 Tascam DR680 (MKI and MKII) Interior Dimensions 9.8 x 5.9 x 5.5" / 24.9 x 15 x 14 cm Sound Devices MixPre-10T 10-Channel / 12-Track Multi-Track Field Recorder BH #SOMIXPRE10T: Dimensions: 8.1 x 6.9 x 1.4" / 206 x 175 x 36 mm Weight: 2 lb / 0.9 kg (Without Batteries) COMPATIBLE BAGS: PortaBrace Silent Audio Organizer Bag for Sound Devices MixPre-10T Recorder B&H # POAOMIXPRE10 PortaBrace AO-1.5SILENT Silent Audio Organizer Bag B&H # POAO15SILENT
Q: 6. Is there dugan automix or mix assist function?
A: Scorpio is powerful and flexible enough to accommodate both MixAssist and Dugan Automatic Mixing. These features will be available in a future firmware release.
Q: 7. Do both batteries need to be mounted at the same time? The mixpre does not offer an option for a 7.4 watt power source-only the 14. Can I power with one and select that output? Or is it recommended to utilize both? If I can power with one battery at a time, what power setting do you recommend selecting?
A: I am not seeing an option for both batteries to be used at the same time.
Q: 8. Does the 32-bit on the 833 have the same 142db DR as the 32-bit-float of the Mix Pre's?
A: For the 833: 32-bit, 120 dB, A-weighted dynamic range typical For the MixPre-Series II: 32 bit precision; 142 dB dynamic range min (A weighted, gain = 10 dB, fader = 0 dB)
Q: 9. Does the Scorpio unit support the Sennheiser Ambeo VR microphone like the Mixpre-10t?
A: At this time, no. There will be a firmware update at some point, but the folks at Sound Devices do not have a time frame. You can link 4 input channels, but the audio will be recorded in 'A' format.
Q: 10. Mackie control universal
A: Scorpio can by controlled from the Sound Devices CL-12 linear fader controller or supported third-party external controllers that conform to the MCU protocol.
