Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I'm told that since these are 63 Ohm impedance, they require a fair amount of power to work properly. In other words, I was told to expect poor results from an iPad or iPhone. Is that correct?

A: These reference headphone are considered high impedance but will work with a mobile device, such as an iPhone or iPad. A portable headphone amplifier, such as the FiiO A1 Portable Headphone Amp (Black), BH #FIA1BK can be used to boost the signal.

Q: 2. Where can I get the original OEM replacement ear pads? Mine are peeling and falling apart. I love these headphones. The earpads are so comfortable.

A: We do not have the Sony brand but these are very similar https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/888545-REG/Auray_eps_mdr7506_Genuine_Sheepskin_Leather_Earpads.html

Q: 3. These are great for recording vocals off of iPhone ?

A: Sony MDR-7506 headphones are great for monitoring audio while recording on any device. These headphones are for listening only. They do not have a built-in microphone. You will need to use a mobile interface that has a microphone input and headphone output in order to record and monitor audio on the iPhone.

Q: 4. How do I shorten the coiled cord on the Sony Mdr 7506?

A: The Sony MDR-7506 has a permanently attached cable. Unfortunately not designed to be user replaced or serviced.

Q: 5. Is this headphone stereo? I assume it is due to type of plug, but just want to verify before purchasing it.

A: Yes - not to be a turd, but if you look at the photo it says so right there. It's a great pair of headphones - have had them for two years and no complaint!

Q: 6. Is this a good headphone to use to manage sound from field recording?

A: It is an industry standard for that application.(answering in case someone else other than the asker benefits)

Q: 7. I saw some Sony headphones advertised as Hi-Res audio capable. Are these headphones capable of that?

A: In a word, no. They are not rated to exceed 20kHz in their upper frequency response. That doesn't mean they can't reproduce these frequencies in some capacity, it means they are not flat (however that is being measured) past 20kHz. In fact, these headphones have a significant drop off past 15Khz, but that does not equate to a more muffled or low-fi type of sound. You'd have to hear the difference between these and something like a Beyerdynamic DT880 to know what I mean. There is no loss of fidelity, but they are not rated up to 25 or 30kHz, which I would consider the minimum to be Hi-Res capable.I'm answering this in case it helps someone else out.

Q: 8. Is the 1/4 adapter screwable?

A: Yes the 1/4 adapter that ships with the 7506s has threads. The adapter fits snuggly over the 1/8 plug and locks in place by twisting / tightening the threaded section at the end of the assembly. The connection is secure. Sound quality and clarity remain excellent.

Q: 9. I own the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x, which I use for film production location sound. I'm looking for a more compact alternative that will take less space in my camera bag. Are the Sony MDR-7506 a good option in that regard?

A: Yes, the Sony MDR-7506 Headphones (BH #SOMDR7506 • MFR #MDR-7506) are a great option for monitoring location sound, with 40mm drive units that can accurately capture a wide dynamic range. They are also easily foldable and should definitely take up less space in your bag than the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x's.

Q: 10. Is the coiled cable replaceable? Does it detach from the headphones?

A: The cable for the Sony MDR-7506 headphones is not detachable.

I'm using it for video editing primarily and also listening music. It would've been nice if the cord was detachable and had non-coil type, straight cord. I usually use it with my laptop and the cord is too long and makes it a little heavy. Before purchasing, I debated between this and Sony MDR-10R, but i saw some reviews that MDR-10R has too much bass. For listening pleasure, I prefer having extra bass, but I wouldn't want any particular range to be exaggerated for production purpose. This pair sounds really clear and crisp. Before this I had a lot of headphones in $$range, and the previous one I was using was old Bose on-ear headphones. With MDR-7506 I could hear some sounds that I did not notice with the Bose pair. And this feels a lot more comfortable on my ears. I'm totally satisfied.

This headset is very well suited for television or videography. It picks up all the extras so well, that you are almost always unhappy - all the unwanted hisses and buzzes all of a sudden manifest themselves in a very audible fashion. This gear is very professional and the curled cord adds durability to it - when you accidentally yank the cable, it simply stretches.

Sonically superior to older versions of MDR 7506, purchased 5 years ago. The current version has increased dynamic range, better definition in string and massive choral passages and more punch in the reproduction of brass and percussion instruments.Because of their high efficiency and light weight as well as their compactness , they are a great sounding portable music system especially with the Sony Walkman.

I use these headphones for both personal and professional use in broadcast, audio and video editing when I'm listening for particular audio ... nuances which are often easier to pick up via headphone compared to monitor speakers. There was a time at the tv network I work for in Canada, that we had literally hundreds of these. And then they started disappearing, so the network subbed them at work terminals with much cheaper models. Understandable, really. Highly recommended, although I did sub out velour ear pads for longer-term comfort. Thanks Sony for keeping these in the mix. And B&H offering amazing pricing on the 7506's.

We have several edit workstations in our office and all are equipped with these headphones. They're durable, perform well, and are cost effective. This is the model we go to when headphones are needed.

I utilize the MDR-7506's in my project studio for tracking purposes. Vocal tracking more than anything is what these mainly get used for in my studio. Overall, I would say they are a great product. At first, I was worried that these might be hyped and not deliver to the level expected, but I was wrong. These definitely provide the clarity and noise-isolation that I was looking to provide for people in my studio.

There is no doubt why this headphones remain as the industry standard for sound mixers, recordists, boom ops, etc. After using the AKG K240 for a long time, the switch to these guys was great.

sound quality is remarkably good for the price. good bass and clean midtones, highs. you will be satisfied with them. I use them to listen to music I've recorded on my Sony PCM-M10 digital portable recorder which I also bought from B&H. Great duo.
