The Mackie 2404VLZ4 24-Channel 4-Bus FX Mixer with USB from the VLZ4 4-Bus Series features Onyx microphone preamps in a high-headroom / low-noise 4-bus design with a feature set suitable for live sound. The mixer is equipped with dual 32-bit RMFX+ effect processors, each with 24 effects including tap delay. It also includes compression on dedicated channels and subgroups that allow for simple, sweet dynamic control.

Additionally, both of the FX processors feature a tap delay and the delays may easily be synchronized with the song at the tap of a finger. The processed signal may be sent directly to the mains and monitors from the effects section or re-routed to the 2 stereo channels to bring them through the EQ and AUX section, utilizing the 60mm fader to draw them into the mix.

The 24-channel, 4-bus FX mixer has 8 single-knob compressors to stop the dynamic signals from poking out of the mix. There are 4 compressors are located on the last 4 microphone inputs so that critical signals (such as vocals, snare drum, guitar or keyboards) may be addressed. In addition, there are single-knob compressors on each of the 4 subgroups so that grouped signals (such as a drum set or a choir of vocalists) may be blended together for paramount smoothness.

This mixer also features a 4 x 2 USB recording and playback function. This means that up to 4 signals may be recorded simultaneously and a stereo mix returned to the mixer for playback. Its built-like-a-tank construction delivers years of reliable use under strenuous conditions. The VLZ4 4-Bus Series offers a compact FX mixer solution in a design that’s flexible, rugged, and professional.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. china?

A: Yes, this product is manufactured in China.

Q: 2. Hi...Just received the mix5...small and nice but...how can I listen to only headphones without also having music coming out the speakers? there is a to headphones button but doesn't do anything...thanks

A: Hi Michael, I have yet to try this with the Mix8 but I will look at it tonight. Have you tried engaging the To Phones button and disengaging the To Mix button? I am guess you have since it seems to be the way it would be done if possible. Though looking at the location of the buttons I am now wondering if they send the RCA inputs to the phones or to Main since they are stacked next to the RCA connectors. I'll do some more looking and experimenting on the 8 and let you know. - Craig

Q: 3. Would this fully work with Linux? (Linux mint) hoping it might since all the processing is done in device n not software

A: Yes, the Mackie ProFX10v3+ 10-Channel Analog Mixer with Built-In FX, USB Recording, and Bluetooth is compatible with Linux.

Q: 4. Can this handle three microphones?t

A: There is just one microphone input offered by this Mackie mixer

Q: 5. Would this work with a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 as my USB connection? I teach online and want to mix in background music from an ipad into my Zoom calls.

A: Yes, the Mackie Mix5 - 5-Channel Compact Mixer could be used to receive background music from an iPad and then send its signal out to the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 2x2 USB Audio Interface, which may allow for more level control over the music. In theory you could also connect the iPad's audio output directly to the Scarlett with the proper cable.

Q: 6. Do the mute buttons on the channel strips have indicator lights to show which channels are muted?

A: Yes, the mute buttons do have indicator lights that illuminate to show when a channel is muted.

Q: 7. Do I need a separate pre-amp to plug the Sennheiser AVX transmitter w/ TRS to XLR into Channels 3 or 4 and get a clean signal?

A: Channels 3/4 on the Mackie Mix8 - 8-Channel Compact Mixer are line level inputs, so yes, you would need a microphone preamp to connect a mic level signal to them.

Q: 8. How many inputs will be available on my DAW when using the USB function?

A: This mixer has just 4 USB out channels, which is basically two stereo pair. If you are recording a small ensemble or solo artist this may be ok, but it is really not intended to be a full fledged multi-channel interface, rather a live board with the ability to record a live mix, or stream. If you are interested in something that might be good in both a live situation where you need a lot of inputs an routing capabilities, yet wish to record tracks to your DAW, consider the Tascam Model 12. It is a hybrid 12/10 io USB interface built in to a nice 12-channel live board. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1539340-REG/tascam_model_12_mixer_intrfc_recordr_controlr.html

Q: 9. How do the VLZ4s compare to the original VLZs in terms of performance? When they stopped making the VLZs in USA, there was a sharp decline in quality.

A: The current line of Mackie VLZs are an evolution of the original 1604s. They have managed to stay relevant and consistently improve on their original design both aesthetically and technologically. They are still the go to mixer in that price point.

Q: 10. What is the signal to noise (s/n) ratio? I can't find it in the manual.

A: The company has not made that information available to the public at this point in time.

Purchased this to donate to church facility. They had an old Mackie CFX12 12 channel mixer that had some channels that were not working. Also 12 channels were just not enough.
This mixer takes us up to 22 channels so we don't have to keep switching cables. It has 3 Aux outputs instead of just 2 on the old one. This third Aux output was sorely needed. Setup and use were very easy. The users guide (a download from Mackie website) had adequate information and was easy to understand. Sound quality is great. It connects to and handles all the instruments and vocal mics we are using without issue. There is a USB input/output channel with is especially great if you need mixer output to use for a stream.
We don't use any of the FX but I did try them out during initial testing of the mixer and it works great. The only thing I wish it had is built in Bluetooth as an input channel so we can use other various devices for audio if needed. But that is a minor thing since there are so many affordable good quality Bluetooth adapters available.
Very, very happy and satisfied with this product.

I'm still learning this thing. I'm a Mackie fan. You can't go wrong with Mackie products.

This is my 4th Mackie mixer in almost 20 years - all still in service. It's getting harder to find a good all-inclusive live analog mixer, but this one is as close as I could find. 17 XLRs should be enough for just about any 4 or 5 piece band, and compression per channel is a nice addition for vocalists who are... new at mic technique. On-board effects definitely help keep a compact and clean set up. I'm mobile and work mostly outside at community events and with non-profit groups, so efficiency in time and space is highly valued.

The only things more I'd ask from a live mixer is a talkback mic (for which Ch. 17 will be dedicated and just sent through the aux, which works but steals an XLR), and an RCA line in for house fill on the break switch (I know many engineers are going to usb or bluetooth devices, but it's nice to have options. I still use cd players and an old smartphone as an mp3 player.) A 4th aux channel would be nice for monitors, but not a necessity as this board is mostly to work with smaller bands and stages.

And as always, B&H was exceptional, and this is a great package deal they offer.
