The Hoya C8 filter is helpful when:

  • You are using daylight-balanced film, the light source is warm, and you want to record accurate colors on the film. Examples of warm light sources are traditional light bulbs and some halogen bulbs.
  • You are shooting a daylight-balanced film and you want to create a day-for-night look. The extra blue cast will help give daytime that night feel, especially on overcast days.

Hoya multicoat (HMC) filters are recommended for enhancing the performance of today's multicoated lenses. These popular filters minimize reflection, reduce flare and ghosting, and result in over 97% average light transmission.

After using these filters for years I tried a less expensive brand X. Although it did a good job of filtering haze and I'm sure protecting my lens it scratched very easily. I did not get a full two years use from it. (I do put my filters to quite the test.) The Hoya filters I put into use seven years ago are still to show their first scratch. A fine filter and in the long run much less expensive than the lower priced ones.
