With the switch accessible in the recessed control panel, you can select between three performance modes for catering to different usage scenarios:

  • Punch Mode: This mode will process the sound, so it has a punchier tone, giving less power to the deep bass more into the upper bass frequencies
  • Smooth Mode: This will keep the original signal character with no preference for deep or upper bass
  • Deep Mode: With this mode, the signal will be processed to provide more deep/low frequencies, while the keeping the upper bass frequencies in a similar place as Smooth Mode

A: Yes, the Yamaha NS-SW100 10" 100W Subwoofer (Black), B&H # YANSSW100BL, would be compatible with the Sony STR-DH790 7.2-Channel A/V Receiver (B&H # SOSTRDH790) as long as it is not turned up to maximum volume. This is a very capable, yet affordable (on sale at least) and small-ish subwoofer. It has a better frequency range and sounds better than another 12 subwoofer I have. People mentioned the auto-power feature being problematic at lower volumes, I can't really speak to that, however I had wondered about that exact issue when getting this subwoofer. Turns out that I have't minded turning it on and off manually since I've acquired the sub, so, for now at least, this is a non-issue.
For the best experience by the way, I very strongly recommend breaking-in your sub. You can find many how-to's online for this. I could tell a difference in quality of sound after breaking the sub in for about 20hrs. It's tedious and you definitely don't want your loved ones around for the process. I ended up buying a tone generator app that allowed me to do a repetitive tone sweep from 20Hz to 65Hz every 10 seconds for a specific amount of time. I disconnected all other speakers and did that at moderate volume for 4hrs and let the subwoofer cool down for an hour. I had a little fan behind the sub pointing at it during the break-in process. I increased the volume in the last few hours, which really made the subwoofer work hard but loosened up the membranes. It worked like a charm!

I bought this for the bedroom surround system and boy it is a very nice subwoofer! It compliments the Definitive Technology front speakers and Infinity center speaker for watching TV and listening to music when I'm not feeling good and staying in bed. This Sony subwoofer would work nicely as a lower cost subwoofer for a main surround system.
