A: You would actually need a capture device, not a simple converter, to ingest the footage from analog sources. If your MacBook Pro Retina has a Thunderbolt Connection the Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Express would be a great choice, B&H #BLUSEXPRESS. It has breakout cables that offer Composite, Component and S-Video inputs for older analog sources.

Q: 9. Does the mini converter retain DIP switch 1 aspect ratio after power cycling? The manual instructions are to cycle switch 1 twice to apply center cut aspect ratio. I want to locate the converter remotely so I need to know if it will retain the center cut aspect ratio after power down / power up cycling.

A: According to the information provided in the manual it states that:Each time you cycle between Off and On you apply anamorphic, center cut or letterbox aspect ratios. Leaving switch 1 set to OFF bypasses the down converter and outputs in HD.When connected to the Blackmagic Converter Utility via USB, your down conversion settings are controlled by the software. If you want the converter to remember your software settings, disconnect from the computer, power cycle your converter and set your down conversion using mini switch 1.
