The 16-stop, 62mm Solar ND Filter from Tiffen is a solid ND filter with a 65,536x filter factor that provides an 16-stop exposure reduction. Its 4.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed while reducing the risk of overexposure. This means you can capture more detailed solar images than might be possible under normal conditions. By also limiting IR and UV light this filter helps ensure color-neutral images, and its multi-layer coating reduces glare.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Hello!Could you please tell me if this filter is compatible with this lens: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/892390-REG/Sony_selp1650_16_50mm_F_3_5_5_6_Power_Zoom.htmlThank you!

A: Yes, the Hoya 40.5mm NXT Circular Polarizer is compatible with the Sony 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 lens.

Q: 2. How is this filter different from the Hoya filter kit, which has three filters for $69? This filter alone costs more than that.

A: Thinner profile and most likely different optical glass technology. I am not certain about the glass. I have not used the filter kit.

Q: 3. What is the proper technique for attaching the filter to the filter threads on the front of the lens? The filter is very thin, with very little to grip, but is further rendered difficult to screw on by the presence of the rotating section of the filter. Basically you can only hold the rotating part so it is tough to get the threaded portion to turn and screw into the threads on the lens. The rotating part just rotates so you can barely get any torque on the threaded portion. I finally got mine to screw in by pushing firmly toward the lens as I turned the filter. I don't want to damage anything. When using this technique the threaded portion turns slowly because it drags more on the lens threads.

A: Since submitting this question, I had a chance to look closely at the filter with my OptiVisor. It seems there is a very thin knurled ring on the threaded part of the filter just below the rotating part. I will have to practice and see if I can master threading it to the lens without cross threading or otherwise damaging anything. I do have a filter wrench, but the threads are so fine and delicate that it is even more difficult to tell if you are crossthreading. That will take some practice, too. The lens filter threads are inside a metal ring of sorts that prevents full sized fingers from being able to grip that knurled surface enough to be able to turn the ring to thread it in.

Q: 4. Does Hoya manufacture this Circular Polarizer in a 95mm filter size?

A: Not currently, but they do have a 95mm Circular Polarizer Filter. Hoya 95mm Circular Polarizer Filter (BH #HOCP95 • MFR #B-95CRPL-GB)

Q: 5. Does this filter fit on a Canon EPS 10-18 lens?

A: You shouldn't have any problems with this combination.

Q: 6. Does is it fits the canon RF 100-500mm ?

A: The Hoya 77mm NXT Plus Circular Polarizer Filter does fit the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM Lens.

Q: 7. Does this filter come with a case?

A: The packaging for the filter is the case, as you can see in the 2nd photo in our images.

Q: 8. Can this filter be used with a Canon Powershot SX420 IS ?

A: Unfortunately, the SX420 IS lacks a filter thread, therefore it cannot work with this filter.

Q: 9. Does this filter fit the Nikon 500mm f/4 insert?

A: It does not. You will need B&H # NICPL405 which is the filter specifically designed for the drop in on that lens. https://bhpho.to/2X7oHNp

Q: 10. Hello,I noticed the only difference between this Hoya circular polarizer and last years model is this one is not coated. What is the benefit of a non-coated filter?Sincerely,Daniel

A: The main benefit of a non-coated filter is a lower price point. A multi-coated filter will provide dramatically improved light transmission and resistance to glare. If you have the option to spend more for multi-coating, I would definitely recommend it.
