Q: 6. I read in the comments that the waist strap is NOT removable. B&H says it is removable - which is it?

A: The compagnon Element Camera Backpack (Volcano Black, 30L) waist strap is removable. Here are the instructions: How do I take the ShiftPro hip belt off from the backpack? You will find fastening straps on the left and right outer fins of the hip belt. You can unthread these. Then reach with your hand into the passage between the back system and the hip belt itself. I bought this thinking that my Fong sphere was just too heavy and was loosing too much light in the wrong direction. With my first shoot, this performed as I hoped it would and look forward to getting a lot more use out of it.

There's nothing about this softbox I don't like. It collapses down flat, it sets up in a few seconds, it looks great, and makes a difference. Too much fun! I also got a cinch strap to attach it faster.

Best softbox of this size I've used. Will fit in every camera bag I own. Only takes a few seconds to set up (be sure to get the accessory velcro strap so you won't need to put the sticky stuff on your speedlight). Quality of light is excellent for its size.

I learnt about this one through Strobist- It collapses really small and can fit in a camera bag easily. The quality of light is great- I'm going to be using this a lot in the future.

I have really enjoy using this softbox on the end of a off-camera flash cord. In order to get good results, you need to hold it pretty close to the subject. In some cases 12 inches or less, but the results are quite stunning. Eye color pops out of the image. When held closeup in full sun, the effect is modern and edgy. One problem is that it is awkward and conspicuous. You really can't sneak up on anyone with this diffuser. Furthermore, you won't have the range to shoot from long distance. This really is mostly for closeup portrait photography and headshots.

In such a small package, light is diffused into a lovely shine instead of an intense beam. I'm not a brolly user (yet) so I can't comment on how these differ from big brollys, but I can say there is a very noticeable difference between using bare flash, bounced flash or sto-fen/fong'd flash. They work best close up in my opinion, but depending on the situation and ambient light, they can easily be backed up and feathered onto the subject. It folds flat and stores easily into the laptop slot of my Kata R103 backpack. It also fits nicely into my Tamrac Pro System 8 shoulder bag. I've made some DIY Strobist quick straps out of an old bicycle inner tube and adhesive Velcro which is a better alternative to the provided stick on strips. I haven't had them long enough to comment on whether or not the white front of the softbox fades or turns a yellowish color as something like this could possibly do and I hope it won't - for a few years at least.

I shoot a lot of baby (rescue) animals, some in dog crates. It is important to get a softly lit shot that reduces the drama of the situation and doesn't freak out the small and already frightened animal. This and the Gary Fong cup are the only things that I have found that are successful. Reducing harsh shadows while maintaining detail.

I use this with my 580EXII and it is awesome! It gives a great soft light. It is really only good for one to two people.

Stick some velcro on your speedlite and pull this thing out of your bag, and you can really up your image quality. It weighs nothing and will definitely save the day once in a while. The best part is that it folds flat and is easy to keep in the pocket or laptop section of a photo bag. I've used it outdoors as a fill flash and on a stand as a backlight with a pair of studio strobes, and it's been fantastic. Time will tell how durable it is, but it seems well made enough (in the USA!) and will be cheap to replace if I manage to break it.

I use the Promax Softbox III for softening the light output on my SB800s and SB900. I really like that in addition to softening the light output, it saves battery life by directing the light in one direction. It does cover the AF Assist on the flash units (which is pretty much only an issue in dimly lit situations), but that is easily remedied by using an SC29, or SU800. I was worried before buying that it would be flimsy and fall off easily, but I was pleasantly surprised by its durability.
