A Canon extender will allow you to focus much closer but you'll lose infinity focus (not a big deal with macro photography). I keep a 12mm and 25mm extender in my bag and use them for close focusing with most of my lenses. If you're really interested in macro photography, try the Canon EF-S 60mm macro lens.
